ADÉLKA KUTILOVÁ student from grade second Through my eyes ADÉLKA KUTILOVÁ  student from grade second MY UNCLE IN USA - 2016

SOMETHING ABOUT PETER When there was communism in the Czech Republic, my uncle decided to emigrate to the USA. It was in 1969. At first he came into New Jersey where he worked in an ordinary factory because he needed money for food and housing. The start had to be hard because he could not speak English and he did not know anyone. He gradually finished studies and found a lot of friends and he married Karen. They have one daughter Christine. Peter lives in Denver. Peter arrives in the Czech Republic just to visit us.

PETER´S VISIT TO CR He visited us with the whole family several years ago.He visited us last summer, too because his mother had the jubilee. Unfortunately he came alone without Karen and Christine. He always eats Czech meals when he visits us. For example: pork meat with sauerkraut and dumplings or sirloin with vegetable cream sauce and dumplings. I remember Peter visiting us with the whole family, Christine didn´t like sirloin with vegetable cream sauce and dumplings. When he visited us, we talked English so I could practise the language. He is very funny. He became a typical American and no one would recognise that he is Czech. His English is perfect. We can say he speaks English better than Czech. It was funny, when he forgo t some Czech words and had to describe them so we could understand them.Sometimes he said ”YEAH“ instead of “ANO” when we were talking. I like his visits. It´s a pity that he doesn´t visit us more often. But one day I would like to see them in the USA.

PETER’S LIFE IN AMERICA Peter does not celebrate Czech holidays. He loves Halloween, Thanksgiving and other American holidays. They have dinner on Thanksgiving Day every year. Karen has got a big family therefore it is a great celebration. On Halloween Peter and the others wear costumes and they give candies to children. They even dress up their dog. The dog was a caterpillar this year and Peter was a pirate. Christmas is a big celebration, too. Their house is always beautifully decorated. Everywhere in their house there are stockings, wreaths and sweets. Every year they send us a Christmas card together with a letter.

They are not going to visit us this holiday but maybe next holiday they are. It is both good and bad to have relatives somewhere abroad. The good thing is that you learn about different culture and the bad thing that you can see them so little.
