Chemical Control Indoor Residual Spray (IRS)

Objectives 1/ Define Introduction of Indoor Residual Spray. 2/ Know Definition of Indoor Residual Spray. 3/ Understand Application of Indoor Residual Spray in the Field.

Introduction Indoor Residual Spray (IRS) Introduction: Many malaria vectors are considered "endophilic"; that is, the mosquito vectors rest inside houses after taking a blood meal. These mosquitoes are particularly susceptible to control through indoor residual spraying (IRS).

Spraying with residual insecticide important in the control of the mosquito vectors which often rest on walls before and after feeding. also effective against bedbugs and some species of indoor biting sand flies, the vectors of leishmaniasis.

Definition Indoor residual spraying or IRS is the process of spraying the inside of dwellings with an insecticide to kill mosquitoes that spread malaria. A dilute solution of insecticide is sprayed on the inside walls of certain types of dwellings—those with walls made from porous materials such as mud or wood but not plaster as in city dwellings.

Mosquitoes are killed by the spray, preventing the transmission of the disease. In 2008, 44 countries employed IRS as a malaria control strategy.(WHO)

Factors that determine the efficacy of wall-spraying: 1- Mosquito resting behaviour: 2- Mosquito susceptibility to insecticides. 3- Suitability of wall or roof surfaces for spraying. 4- Suitability of insecticides. 5- Cooperation of house owners.

Dosage: The dosage rate is the amount of insecticide applied to a unit of surface area. It is usually given in grams of insecticide per square metre (g/m2). Spray cycle: The spray cycle is the time between consecutive insecticide spray rounds.
