Major Academic Plan (MAP) Associate in Arts BA in Art History (62 credits) Art Department College of Arts, Letters, and Education Why study Art? Pursuing art as a major gives students the chance to develop the highest levels of artistic performance, pursue professional education, and build a cultural understanding and aesthetic appreciation of visual art. EWU Gallery of Art Exhibitions of student, faculty, and visiting artist work are rotated quarterly in the Gallery of Art. A unique, central space in the Art Building, the gallery offers students first-hand experience with the methods of successful visual art display.   The gallery program also sponsors public art lectures, visiting artists’ workshops, and cooperative exhibitions with Northwest museums. Art History objectives In the major students will: have a fundamental ability to read and comprehend texts and to analyze works of art with peers and faculty; have a fundamental knowledge of major movements, styles and artists within the history of art; have the ability to do independent research from diverse texts within the subject of Art History; have the ability to bring together their research into clear written form; demonstrate an awareness of current scholarly opinion regarding issues of interpretation in the field and the ability to articulate and discuss art within our own culture and the art of culturally-diverse settings.
