GoMath! Reminders Our Math curriculum is developed based on the needs and expectations of the PA Core and the assessments that relate to them. Our curriculum drives our instruction and therefore you will notice some problems and pages throughout the year that we will skip. The textbooks are one of our resources, but we always look for ways to incorporate other resources/technologies to make our instruction more exciting and relevant. Any problems and pages skipped can be used for practice at home for test review or over breaks. Math classes will develop a system for identifying the problems and pages that have been skipped that can be done at home.

GoMath! Reminders Along with pages and problems that might be skipped, we also have adjusted our pacing. Through reflection and careful consideration of many factors, the 3rd Grade Team has made these changes to our pacing... Chapter 2 will be taught before Chapter 1 Chapter 2 is smoother transition into 3rd Grade. Has similar concepts taught in Chapter 1, but are more manageable to start 3rd Grade. Chapter 7 will be taught after Chapter 12 Importance of Chapters 11 and 12 before PSSA testing in April. Students learn the concept and strategies of Division in Chapter 6. Chapter 7 is a review of those skills and strategies from Chapter 6. It is also important to know that the entire 3rd Grade of North Allegheny will be following this sequence. When explaining that chapter 2 is before chapter remember that this was done to give the kids a stronger start in 3rd Grade. The content and rigor was seen to be more manageable for students at the beginning of the year. When explaining that chapter 7 is moved after chapter 12 this was done to try to ensure that all students would learn the concepts in Chapters 11 and 12 before PSSA testing in April. We are making sure that students are given all the tools they need to be successful on these assessments. Chapter 7 reviews division facts and strategies and can be a good springboard into the summer before 4th grade where they will expand on their knowledge of division.

Nightly review of facts at home is essential. Grades one through five daily Math instruction. Ten-minutes of instruction dedicated to this program each day in class. Sequential practice and mastery of math facts for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Research-based program:  students who gain automaticity with their basic facts are then able to free up cognitive abilities to focus on more complex math concepts. Nightly review of facts at home is essential.

Introduction for Families

Seesaw is a new way we’re sharing what your child is learning at school. Seesaw gives your child a place to document their learning, be creative and learn how to use technology.

Each child gets their own journal and we will periodically add entries to it, like photos, videos, drawings, or notes.

When there are updates, you can be notified. You’ll only get notifications about your child’s new journal posts. You can access your child’s journal anytime via iOS app, Android app, Kindle Fire app, or on the website using other smartphones and computers for the whole year!

All student content is safe and secure Visit Seesaw’s Privacy Center to learn more about their privacy principles and commitment to student safety. Journals are only accessible by your child, their teachers and yourself Journals are not public on the web and information is never shared with third parties

Be sure to sign up! I’ve already added some pictures from the first week of school to their accounts. Use this slide if you’re sharing this presentation with parents in person, like at Back to School Night, and have your parent invite handouts printed out. Parents can sign up right there - it just takes a minute!

How else can we work together? Check Seesaw regularly. You'll get notifications about new entries in your child's journal and can respond to their work. Customize your notification preferences in Account Settings. Celebrate your child's classroom success. Help to encourage the skills your child is working on in class outside of school. Specific comments are best. Asking questions, or complementing specific details can add to the learning conversation. In a group or 'everyone' post your comment is visible to everyone tagged - the students and their family members. It’s a great opportunity to lift up the whole class! 2017-2018 Tier 1 Focus We are focusing on Core Instruction and Universal Screeners for the implementation of year 1.

North Allegheny Implementation Plan 2017-2018 School Year Focus of Year 1: Administration of Universal Screener and differentiation of instruction to meet all students learning needs. A universal screener is a brief assessment that is administered 3 times a year.
