Warm-Up: Using RATE-C, along with the character and trait that you drew on Tuesday, write a literary analysis paragraph discussing how the author reveals the specific trait of your character.

Learning Target: I can provide relevant textual evidence to support an analysis of the text. RL7.1

What is your prompt asking? Using RATE-C, along with the character and trait that you drew on Tuesday, write a literary analysis paragraph discussing how the author reveals the specific trait of your character.

RATE-C Restate Answer Tie-in (background information….the situation surrounding the answer) Evidence (direct quote with page number) Commentary (explain how or why the evidence proves your answer......don’t just restate)

Why RATE-C? Why are we leaving ACE? Think fast! 19 days left

Your Outline For Fast Thinking In 5 minutes, create an outline that allows you to organize your thoughts and satisfy your prompt by using the RATE-C criteria. Be prepared to share and explain.

Chunk 1: Restate and Answer Using RATE-C, along with the character and trait that you drew on Tuesday, write a literary analysis paragraph discussing how the author reveals the specific trait of your character. Old Charley Burns & Irresponsible

Chunk 1: Restate and Answer Using RATE-C, along with the character and trait that you drew on Tuesday, write a literary analysis paragraph discussing how the author reveals the specific trait of your character. Old Charley Burns & Irresponsible The author, Edward Bloor, reveals that Old Charley Burns is the irresponsible boss of Mr. Fisher’s workplace.

We do! Pick a Character/Trait Using RATE-C, along with the character and trait that you drew on Tuesday, write a literary analysis paragraph discussing how the author reveals the specific trait of your character.

STOP!!!!!! WE DON’T HAVE THIS YET!!!!! Tie-in & Evidence STOP!!!!!! WE DON’T HAVE THIS YET!!!!!

Old Charley Burns-----Irresponsible Which evidence is stronger to prove that he is an irresponsible boss? Evidence A “I don’t know that it’s ok, but that’s the way it is. He’s the boss. He makes his own hours. He told me I can make my own hours, too.” (page 11) Evidence B “Old Charley Burns was out of the office at a stock car race, so Dad had to take the heat.” (page 83) Evidence C “It turns out that in the ten-year, multi-million-dollar building boom on the West side of Tangerine County, Old Charley’s department never denied one request for a permit.” (page 85)

Tie-in & Evidence Tie-in: Before Lake Windsor Middle School was built, Old Charley Burn’s Civil Engineering Department issued a permit to build a school without inspecting the land. Add to your evidence: The text states, “It turns out that in the ten-year, multi-million-dollar building boom on the West side of Tangerine County, Old Charley’s department never denied one request for a permit.” (page 85)

Now YOU do! Think about your character and the given trait. Think about how the author reveals your character’s trait and select the strongest textual evidence to PROVE your trait. Timer: 20 minutes (10 for evidence/10 for Tie-in addition)

Commentary (explain how or why the evidence proves your answer) The evidence demonstrates that Old Charley Burns is unquestionably irresponsible because his department was careless about permit distributions. If Old Charley Burns had held his department accountable for the permits they issued, they could have found that the land that Lake Windsor Middle School was built on was a safety hazard. In conclusion, if Old Charley Burns would have been responsible, the sinkhole incident never would have happened.

Add your commentary.

Now put it all together! The author, Edward Bloor, reveals that Old Charley Burns is the irresponsible boss of Mr. Fisher’s workplace. Before Lake Windsor Middle School was built, Old Charley Burns’s Civil Engineering Department issued a permit to build a school without inspecting the land. The text states, “It turns out that in the ten-year, multi-million-dollar building boom on the West side of Tangerine County, Old Charley’s department never denied one request for a permit.” (85) The evidence demonstrates that Old Charley Burns is unquestionably irresponsible because his department was careless about permit distributions. If Old Charley Burns had held his department accountable for the permits they issued, they could have found that the land that Lake Windsor Middle School was built on was a safety hazard. In conclusion, if Old Charley Burns would have been responsible, the sinkhole incident never would have happened.

Now YOU put yours all together For submission: Side 1: Your outline Side 2: Your Character Analysis Final Draft
