This lesson explains the differences between community service and volunteerism.

Lesson Objectives Define volunteerism by identifying the three basic concepts that explain the meaning of the word. List services that cadets can provide the community. Produce a graphic representation of the number of hours cadets volunteer.

Lesson Objectives Identify the benefits of volunteerism to the individual and the community. Develop a presentation in support of volunteerism.

Introduction There are many reasons why students should volunteer. While required community service can provide worthwhile experiences for students, it should not be confused with volunteerism.

Volunteering Volunteering helps others. Volunteering looks good on your college application.

Volunteering Because volunteerism keeps teens occupied, students who volunteer are less likely to abuse drugs. Students who volunteer are also more likely to: do well in school vote in elections gain an understanding of civic responsibility.

Conclusion The act of volunteering implies choice. No matter what the service, volunteering will always provide a benefit to the community and a sense of accomplishment to the volunteer.
