NLT – Romans 5:12-15 12When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned. 13Yes, people sinned even before the law was given. But it was not counted as sin because there was not yet any law to break. 14Still, everyone died—from the time of Adam to the time of Moses—even those who did not disobey an explicit commandment of God, as Adam did. Now Adam is a symbol, a representation of Christ, who was yet to come. 15But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ.

NLT – Romans 5:16-19 16And the result of God’s gracious gift is very different from the result of that one man’s sin. For Adam’s sin led to condemnation, but God’s free gift leads to our being made right with God, even though we are guilty of many sins. 17For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ. 18Yes, Adam’s one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ’s one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone. 19Because one person disobeyed God, many became sinners. But because one other person obeyed God, many will be made righteous.

NLT – Romans 5:20-21 20God’s law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant. 21So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

NLT – Romans 5:12 12When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.

Adam started out in Paradise! NLT – Genesis 1:27-31 Adam started out in Paradise! 27So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.” 29Then God said, “Look! I have given you every seed-bearing plant throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food. 30And I have given every green plant as food for all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, and the small animals that scurry along the ground—everything that has life.” And that is what happened. 31Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good!

But that soon ended NLT – Genesis 1:27-31 22Then the LORD God said, “Look, the human beings have become like us, knowing both good and evil. What if they reach out, take fruit from the tree of life, and eat it? Then they will live forever!”  23So the LORD God banished them from the Garden of Eden, and he sent Adam out to cultivate the ground from which he had been made.  24After sending them out, the LORD God stationed mighty cherubim to the east of the Garden of Eden. And he placed a flaming sword that flashed back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

“counted” – Greek: to charge to, or put to one’s account NLT – Romans 5:13-14a 13Yes, people sinned even before the law was given. But it was not counted as sin because there was not yet any law to break. 14aStill, everyone died—from the time of Adam to the time of Moses—even those who did not disobey an explicit commandment of God, as Adam did… “counted” – Greek: to charge to, or put to one’s account

A figure, copy, image, pattern, or model NLT – Romans 5:14b 14bNow Adam is a symbol, a representation of Christ, who was yet to come. symbol – Greek tupos A figure, copy, image, pattern, or model

In what way was Adam a representation of Christ? NLT – Romans 5:14b 14bNow Adam is a symbol, a representation of Christ, who was yet to come. In what way was Adam a representation of Christ? His single act of disobedience had a cataclysmic impact on all of humanity. Just a Christ’s loving sacrifice impacted all of mankind.

and died a criminal’s death on a cross. NLT – Philippians 2:8-9 8he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. 9Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names,

Building, or creating, something is always greater than destroying it. NLT – Romans 5:15 15But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ. Building, or creating, something is always greater than destroying it. What Christ did was by grace and it was a gift!

With Adam we are found guilty With Christ we are found innocent NLT – Romans 5:16 16And the result of God’s gracious gift is very different from the result of that one man’s sin. For Adam’s sin led to condemnation, but God’s free gift leads to our being made right with God, even though we are guilty of many sins. 16Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. NIV With Adam we are found guilty With Christ we are found innocent

NLT – Romans 5:17-19 17For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many.

In the NIV Bible, the word “one” is used 13 times in Romans 5:12-19 12Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned— 13To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law. 14Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come. 15But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! 16Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. 17For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ! 18Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people. 19For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous. NIV

With which Adam do you want to identify yourself ? NLT – Corinthians 15:45-46 45The Scriptures tell us, “The first man, Adam, became a living person.” But the last Adam—that is, Christ—is a life-giving Spirit. 46What comes first is the natural body, then the spiritual body comes later.  With which Adam do you want to identify yourself ?
