THE SPIRIT AND THE WORD Lesson 1 for January 7, 2017

Revealer. Inspirer. Truthful. Our teacher. No contradiction. The Holy Spirit has been the origin and the driving force of the written Word of God–the Bible. The work of the Holy Spirit is still closely related to the Word. He’s still related to the Bible even though it has already been written. The Holy Spirit and the origin of the Word: Revealer. Inspirer. Truthful. The Holy Spirit and the Word today. Our teacher. No contradiction.

REVELATION AND INSPIRATION “This salvation was something even the prophets wanted to know more about when they prophesied about this gracious salvation prepared for you. They wondered what time or situation the Spirit of Christ within them was talking about when he told them in advance about Christ’s suffering and his great glory afterward.” (1 Peter 1:10-11 NLT) Revelation and inspiration are connected but they aren’t the same. Inspiration is how the Holy Spirit tells the truth through human beings. Revelation is the knowledge that the Holy Spirit imparts about things that we can’t understand by ourselves. Therefore, revelation is the truth the Spirit reveals and inspiration is the way He moves people to tell that truth to us.

THE REVELATION OF THE WORD “But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.” (1 Corinthians 2:10) How could we know God’s will if the Holy Spirit hadn’t revealed it through His Word? The Holy Spirit revealed truths to the Bible authors. They actually couldn’t understand or see those truths by themselves. That’s why Peter said that “prophecy never came by the will of man.” (2P. 1:21). The truths in the Bible are direct revelation from God. They are not human ideas or interpretations but God’s.

THE INSPIRATION OF THE WORD The Bible authors weren’t just God’s typists. “for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God[a] spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” (2 Peter 1:21) Sometimes they received exact words preceded by “Thus says the Lord,” (Isaiah 37:6). Sometimes they saw visions or dreams that they described with their own words (Ezekiel 1:4). Sometimes they investigated and researched to explain the facts and the teachings properly (Luke 1:6). God guided them to explain His thoughts in a reliable and trustworthy way with their own inspired words. The writing process was different for each person and each moment.

THE TRUTHFULNESS OF THE WORD “The entirety of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever.” (Psalm 119:160) Some people doubt the Bible is true because: They don’t understand that the Bible authors expressed the truth according to their time, place and culture. There are facts in the Bible that go beyond our human understanding (the universal Flood, crossing the Red Sea, Jesus’ virginal birth, etc.) But should we believe our own thoughts or the “Spirit of truth” ones (John 14:17)? God cannot lie (Hebrews 6:18). Therefore, everything He has said through His Word is TRUTH. We cannot judge the Bible; our thoughts must be judged by it.

OUR TEACHER What is this truth that the Holy Spirit guides us into? “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.” (John 16:13) What is this truth that the Holy Spirit guides us into? It is the truth about God. Each doctrine of the Bible reveals something of the beauty of the truth about the God who loves us and longs for us to be saved in His kingdom. We cannot understand the truths in the Bible by our own reasoning, because spiritual truths must be understood spiritually (1Co. 2:13). That’s why the Holy Spirit helps us to: Understand the doctrinal truths in the Bible. Understand the truth about us. When we decide to respond to the leading of the Holy Spirit and humbly accept the divine instruction in the Bible, our lives are changed by God’s grace, and our minds are protected against the deceptions of the devil.

NO CONTRADICTION “For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?” (John 5:46-47) Jesus encourages us to study the Word so we can get to know Him and to receive eternal life (John 5:39). It’s impossible to believe in Jesus and to reject the message in His written Word. However, can the Holy Spirit guide us to a truth about Jesus (or any other doctrine) that contradicts the Biblical message (John 16:13-14)? The Holy Spirit cannot contradict the Word of God. If someone says he’s being driven by the Holy Spirit but he teaches doctrines that contradict the Bible, then he’s not telling the truth.

“God intends that even in this life the truths of His word shall be ever unfolding to His people. There is only one way in which this knowledge can be obtained. We can attain to an understanding of God’s word only through the illumination of that Spirit by which the word was given.” E.G.W. (Steps to Christ, cp. 12, p. 109)
