Topic Sentence A topic sentence is a sentence that explains the idea you will discuss in that one paragraph. All topic sentences should be explanations of the subtopics in your thesis.

Analyze (Break Down) Your Thesis Statement. Explain the history. Point #1 During the Holocaust, Elie Wiesel changes from a spiritual, sensitive little boy to a spiritually dead, unemotional man. Point #3 Point #2 Point #4 Point #5 Point #6 All subtopics/points need to be discussed in your essay. Each point will become a topic sentence.

Example: Thesis: During the Holocaust, Elie Wiesel changes from a spiritual, sensitive little boy to a spiritually dead, unemotional man. Topic sentence #1: Before the Holocaust, Elie Wiesel was an untypically spiritual young boy. Topic sentence#2: As a result of the atrocities Wiesel saw on a daily basis, his spiritual faith in God was strongly challenged.

The Body Interpretation!!! When you use a quote you must provide an interpretation, not a summary, about how this quote is appropriate to the development of the topic and thesis. Interpret: To explain

Step 1 (Claim) Topic sentence—the main idea of the paragraph in a sentence.
