Acceptance, patience, and tolerance Acceptance, patience, and tolerance. Three words that epitomize many of the ideas in To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee. To Kill a Mockingbird is a fictional story about the life and times of Scout, a lawyer’s daughter, during the 1930’s. In this novel, Atticus, a lawyer, demonstrates tolerance of his community’s short sightedness and prejudice in reference to those who suffer harsh judgment based upon previous incidents, rumor, and the color of their skin. Throughout the novel, Atticus continuously exhibits fairness and civility toward all. In the end, his patience and tolerance of those with opposing viewpoints helps Scout to evolve into young girl who realizes that it is important to consider the view point of others before snapping to any conclusion or judgment about them. Tolerance, as demonstrated by Atticus, is a willingness to consider the viewpoints of others, treat others with dignity and respect, and deal with others in a fair manner.
Your turn…
Choose your topic… Consider the three seminar topics you chose to track over the course of reading Night. Which ONE do you understand best? Do you have plenty of quotes in relationship to it? Do you have an in-depth understanding of the meaning BEHIND the words --- how those quotes impacted your character? The plot? The theme?
The essay prompts… Now read through the prompts… Select the one that best coincides with your seminar topic.
Brainstorm… Read the prompt carefully… Develop three REASONS as listed in the prompt For each reason, select a quote that will support your reason. You may have to go back to the text should none of yours work. On a sheet of paper, write your topic. Next, write your three reasons.
ANT Thesis statement: Write a thesis statement. It should encompass the three reasons without explaining them in detail. On the same sheet of paper that you previously used, write a thesis statement.
Example: Thesis Statement Tolerance, as demonstrated by Atticus, is a willingness to consider the viewpoints of others, treat others with dignity and respect, and deal with others in a fair manner.
