THE COMPOUND LIGHT MICROSCOPE Biology THE COMPOUND LIGHT MICROSCOPE

What is the Compound Microscope? The compound microscope is the most used instrument in biology classes. It contains a combination of lenses. You will be responsible for learning the name, function, and location of each part of the microscope.

Label the Parts of the Microscope eyepiece Body tube nosepiece arm Low-power objective stage High power objective Coarse adjustment knob Stage clips diaphragm Fine adjustment knob illuminator base

Functions of Microscope Parts Eyepiece- contains a magnifying lens(usually 10X) Arm-supports the body tube Stage-supports the slide being observed Opening of the stage- permits light to pass up to the eyepiece Fine adjustment knob-moves the body tube slightly to sharpen the image Coarse adjustment knob- moves the stage to focus the image Base-supports the microscope

Functions of Microscope Parts Illuminator- produces light or reflects light up toward the eyepiece Diaphragm- regulates the amount of light passing up toward the eyepiece Diaphragm lever- opens and closes the diaphragm Stage clips- holds the slide in place Low-power objective- provides a magnification of 10X and it’s the shortest objective High-power objective- provides a magnification of 40X and is the longest objective Nosepiece- holds the objectives and can be rotated to change the magnification

Functions of Microscope Parts Body tube- maintains the proper distance between the eyepiece and the objectives

Total magnification The formula eyepiece magnification (10 x) x objective lens magnification Example : What’s the total magnification for a microscope if it’s objective lens has a magnification of 40x? 10x * 40 x= 400x Example: What’s the total magnification for a microscope if it’s objective lens has a magnification of 15x? 10x * 15 x= 150x
