Common Core/Next Generation Science Standards Addressed! MS‐LS2‐1. Analyze and interpret data to provide evidence for the effects of resource availability on organisms and populations of organisms in an ecosystem. [Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on cause and effect relationships between resources and growth of individual organisms and the numbers of organisms in ecosystems during periods of abundant and scarce resources. RST.6‐8.1 Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of science and technical texts. (MS-LS1-3) WHST.6‐8.1 Write arguments focused on discipline content. (MS-LS1-3) WHST.6‐8.8 Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources; assess the credibility of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and providing basic bibliographic information for sources. (MS-LS1-8)

Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Standards Addressed! BS.01.03. Analyze the relationship and implications of bioethics, laws and public perceptions on applications of biotechnology in agriculture (e.g., ethical, legal, social, cultural issues). Sample Measurement: The following sample measurement strands are provided to guide the development of measurable activities (at different levels of proficiency) to assess students’ attainment of knowledge and skills related to the above performance indicator. The topics represented by each strand are not all-encompassing. BS.01.03.01.a. Research and summarize the emergence, evolution and implications of bioethics associated with biotechnology in agriculture.

Bell Work!

Interest Approach Ask students to define agri-science, agriculture, and technology. Record some of the more common definitions on the classroom writing surface. Use the definitions as a basis for a discussion of the role that the sciences and their practical use play in providing students with food, clothing, and shelter. Ask the class to provide examples of the use of science and technology in various agricultural practices.

Student Learning Objectives 1. Explain the meaning of agriscience and technology. 2. Identify the major areas of agriscience 3. Explain the benefits of research in new areas of agriscience.

Terms Agriscience Agronomy Aquaculture Biotechnology Entomology Environmental science Forestry Genetic engineering Horticulture Life science Mathematics Mechanical technology Olericulture Ornamental horticulture Physical science Pomology

What are Agriscience and Technology? Agriscience and technology are extremely important in the ability to produce more plants and animals to meet the increasing world population.

What are Agriscience and Technology? A. Agriscience is the use of science in producing food, fiber, and shelter. It involves four major areas of science.

What are Agriscience and Technology? 1. Mathematics: is the science of numbers.

What are Agriscience and Technology? 2. Physical science: is the study of nonliving matter. Examples include chemistry and physics.

What are Agriscience and Technology? 3. Life science: is the study of living things. This is also commonly referred to as biology.

What are Agriscience and Technology? 4. Social science: is the study of human behavior. Examples include psychology and sociology.

What are Agriscience and Technology? B. Technology is the practical use of science. In this definition, the word practical is stressed. Technology deals with putting science to good use.

What are the Major Areas of Agriscience? Agriscience is made up of several areas of applied science (science in action).

What are the Major Areas of Agriscience? A. Agronomy: is the study of plants and how they relate to soil. It deals with the production of crops and grasses and the improvement and conservation of soil.

What are the Major Areas of Agriscience? B. Horticulture is the science of growing plants for food, comfort, and beauty. 1. Ornamental horticulture involves growing and using plants for their beauty. It includes floriculture, landscape horticulture, and interiorscaping. 2. Food crop production involves two main areas: A. Olericulture is the growing of vegetables. B. Pomology is the production of fruits and nuts.

What are the Major Areas of Agriscience? C. Forestry is the science of growing and using trees. D. Entomology is the branch of zoology that deals with insects and related small animals. E. Animal science is the study of the production of animals for food.

What are the Major Areas of Agriscience? F. Poultry science is concerned with raising chickens and related fowl, like pheasants, ducks, and emu. G. Aquaculture is the science of farming in water. It deals with growing both plants and animals.

What are the Major Areas of Agriscience? H. Environmental science involves ways of wisely using and protecting the things around us. Emphasis is on natural resources. I. Mechanical technology is the use of machines and equipment to do work.

What role does research play in merging areas of Agriscience? Research in agriscience is providing exciting results for both consumers and producers. It is allowing producers to raise more plants and animals with fewer inputs.

What role does research play in merging areas of Agriscience? A. Biotechnology: involves using biology to develop new products or processes. Examples include new vaccines for the protection of animals and the development of waste-eating bacteria that protect the environment.

What role does research play in merging areas of Agriscience? B. Genetic engineering: is an advanced form of biotechnology. It involves changing the nature of living organisms. Through genetic engineering, crops that resist insect damage have been developed.

What role does research play in merging areas of Agriscience? C. Precision farming: is using cropping practices that improve yields based on the needs of the land. It allows crop inputs to be more closely controlled.

What role does research play in merging areas of Agriscience? D. Remote sensing: allows data to be gathered and recorded from great distances. This technology enables better detection of crop diseases and improved weather forecasting.

What role does research play in merging areas of Agriscience? E. New areas of agriscience have raised issues that previously did not have to be de-bated. Some of these issues include: 1. Food safety 2. Pollution 3. Human rights 4. Conservation of resources

Review/Summary What are the major areas of agriscience? What role does research play in merging areas of agriscience? What areas of agriscience have raised issues? How does technology influence agriculture?

Student Learning Activities The End! NEXT: Student Learning Activities

Student Learning Activities Sample tests are avalible in the Lesson Plan tab.

Students can choose from: Have students choose a area of Agriscience that interests them. then have students research their aria and write a one to two page paper on what they learned about that aria and if that is something that interests them. Students can choose from: Agronomy Genetic engineering Horticulture Precision farming Forestry Remote sensing Entomology Animal science Poultry science Aquaculture Environmental science Mechanical technology Biotechnology

KEY

Split students up in to five groups and assign each group an aria of agriscience (mathematics, physical science, life science, social science, and technology). Have each group research their aria and create some kind of display (poster, power point, model, ext.) to present to the class. Each student in the group should have to speak for 2 minuets.
