What prompted the letter? 1 John 2:18: “You have heard that the Antichrist is coming, and already many such antichrists have appeared. From this we know that the last hour has come. 19 These people left our churches, but they never really belonged with us; otherwise they would have stayed with us. When they left, it proved that they did not belong with us.”

What were the false teachers teaching? Three heresies (false teachings) “If we claim we have fellowship with Him while walking in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth” (1:5) “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves” (1:8) “If we say we have not sinned, we make God a liar and his truth is not in us.” (1:10).

How can we know we have eternal life?

How can we know we have eternal life? Three tests The test of obedience. “And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments.” (2:3 NLT) The test of love. “If we love our brothers and sisters who are believers, it proves that we have passed from death to life. But a person who has no love is still dead.” (3:14 NLT) The test of correct belief about Christ. “Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? … No one who denies the Son has the Father.” (2:22-23 NLT) “I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist.” (2 John 7 NIV)

How can this letter make a difference in our lives? Fully share in the joy of koinonia (shared life) with one another and with God. Live in victory over sin.
