Why does your datacenter need HyperConverged Infrastructure? GTW 2016 Chittra M (chittra.85@gmail.com) 18 March 2016
Agenda 1 Traditional Datacenter 2 SDDC 3 Converged Infrastructure 4 What is HyperConverged Infrastructure 5 Who can adopt HCI? 6 HCI solutions available in Market 7 Q & A
Traditional Datacenter
Traditional datacentre has server, network and storage. Disadvantages: Occupies lot of space. Under utilised resources – storage may not be fully provisioned at all but you land up purchasing the entire system Messy wiring Yester year approach
Software Defined Data Center (SDDC)
The Software-Defined Data Center Transform storage by aligning it with app demands Expand virtual compute to all applications SDDC involves decoupling software from hardware to improve agility, flexibility and efficiency Abstracting, Pooling and Automating resources to make them more easily consumed Four key pillars of SDDC… Expanding compute to all applications… Virtualize the network to increase speed and efficiency… Replacing manual approaches to IT management with automation… Storage has long been a critical piece of every datacenter Not only does it allow you to store data, but we are transitioning into a data-driven era Capacity and speed are important The industry is changing, new competition, new technologies Hyperconverged infrastructure is one way to implement the SDDC Virtualize the network for speed and efficiency Management tools give way to automation
Converged Infrastructure
Converged Infrastructure Hardware focussed Building block approach Data management challenges still remain. Functionality of traditional storage array migrated into virtualization platform. Resource ratios are fixed Usually include only the server and storage Converged infrastructure is building the physical components together. It is still possible to decouple the server and storage. Mostly it is only the server and storage that is available and network is still the legacy. This is more like assembling everything together in one rack. It does not really provide the benefits of software defined storage CONFIDENTIAL
Hyper Converged Infrastructure
HyperConverged Infrastructure Hyper-convergence (hyperconvergence) is a type of infrastructuresystem with a software- centric architecture that tightly integrates compute, storage, networking and virtualization resources and other technologies from scratch in a commodity hardware box supported by a single vendor. HyperConverged Infrastructure (HCI) on the other hand is prebuilt and provided as one appliance. The server, network and storage are tightly clubbed with each other. Here again we make use of automation, policy based placement of VMs and all the requirement catering for a SDDC
Why HyperConvergence? Software focussed Use of commodity x86 hardware Centralized systems & management Easy workload migration Scalability & Efficiency Easy Automation Low Cost Policy driven VMs Shared resources Data Protection
Who can adopt HyperConvergence? Modernisizing Technology smoothly Deploy new green field projects Multiple kind of storage – SSD/ Flash Spinning up new applications Single management system No more resource challenges Data efficient backups Use for test/dev environment Implementing disaster recovery CONFIDENTIAL
