Astronauts Laika the dog

LAIKA was a stray dog from Moscow, She was part Husky and part Terrier LAIKA was a stray dog from Moscow, She was part Husky and part Terrier. she was born in 1954 and was 3 years old when the soviet space program recruited her as an astronaut.

She went in a spacecraft called Sputnik 2 She went in a spacecraft called Sputnik 2. THE launch of the spacecraft was on November 3rd, 1957 and she became the first animal to orbit the earth.

Unfortunately laika did not survive the mission Unfortunately laika did not survive the mission. While she was in the spacecraft, Laika died from overheating.

In 1959 the Romanians issued a postage stamp with a photo of laika and the words: ”laika, first traveler into cosmos” in 1964 she was included on the monument to the conquerors of space in Moscow. in 1997 a statue and plaque were created at Star city, Russia. On April 11, 2008, the Russian officials unveiled a monument to laika. The monument is of a dog standing on top of a rocket.
