Content Greek myth of Archaic period. Homeric epos. Pantheon of Gods.

Archaic Greece

Archaic Greece was the period in Greek history lasting from the eighth century BC to the second Persian invasion of Greece in 480 BC, part of the Greco-Persian wars, between the Greek Dark Ages and Classical Greece. It was characterized by developments in Greek politics, economics, international relations, warfare, and culture. It became the base for the classical period, both politically and culturally.

Myth (in literature) - is any traditional story consisting of events that are ostensibly historical, though often supernatural, explaining the origins of a cultural practice or natural phenomenon; also telling about peoples’ thinkings about the world, their place in it, its creation and about Gods and Heroes.

«Illiad» and «Odyssey» of Homer «Theogony» of Hesiod «Library» of Pseudo-Apollodorus «Dionysiaca» of Nonnus

ILLIAD 1) Author – Homer. 2) Heroes – Achilles, Hector, Odysseus, Paris, Helena, Ajax the Great

«Illiad» starts with the arrival of Trojans princes Hector and Paris to the Spartan ruler Menelaus for making peaace between them. But Paris fell in love with beautiful Helen, who was wife of Menelaus. And when Menelaus was in Crete Paris abducted Helena. But Menelaus knew about it and told about it to his brother Agamemnon. «Helen and Paris»

Brothers Menelaus and Agamemnon made all Greece declare war on Troy Brothers Menelaus and Agamemnon made all Greece declare war on Troy. There were also many heroes: Odysseus, Ajax the Great, Diomedes, Antilochus and of course Achilles-the greatest warrior of all times.

Gods also took part in that war Gods also took part in that war. Poseidon and Athena supported Greeks, but Apollo, who would be one of the most important figures in the war, supported Trojans. Duel of Paris and Menelaus caused the first battle because Hector helped his brother. Agamemnon quarreled with Achilles and Trojans won.

Then there was a duel of Hector and Ajax, and in battle Hector killed Patroclus, who was the best friend of Achilles. Agamemnon told about it to Achilles and he killed the Trojan prince. But at the end Achilles was killed by the arrow of Paris with help of Apollo and got in his heel.

Trojans almost defeated Greeks, but Odysseus decided to cheat: his warriors made a giant wooden horse, in which the best of them were hidden. Trojans took it as a prize and at night Greeks killed all Trojan warriors and burned(burnt) everything: the great Troy fell.

Gods of Olympus

Hera Zeus Hermes Poseidon Athena Pan Ares Aphrodite Artemis Hades

Gaia «began» from the Chaos.

Mother Gaia gave the life to mountains, Pontus(sea) and Uranus(sky), who became her husband.

The next rulers of the Earth were 12 immortal titans-children of Gaia and Uranus.

Cronus/Kronos(titan) was the leader of titans, but he was overthrown by his own son Zeus and imprisoned in Tartarus. Zeus became the ruler of Greece.

Three Gods became rulers of the Earth: Zeus was the supreme God and God of thunder, Poseidon-God of seas, Hades-God the underworld.

Some myths tell us that the man was created from water and clay by the most clever titan Prometheus.
