The Gist of SI in Pictures

The Essential Elements Targets Subjects Not Students Offers Peer-Facilitated Sessions Combines Content & Study Skills Leader Attends Every Class Meeting Leader Receives Ongoing Training

We each have a role to play in making SI successful!

Role of Your SI Leader Attend every lecture/lab of your class participate in class & identify student needs act as a model student 1 thing SI Leaders should never do, however—grade papers!! Establish rapport and build relationships with students Empower students to help themselves Meet with you weekly (30 min.) to discuss how SI sessions are progressing and explore ways to better assist students Promote upcoming SI sessions in class at start of each lecture Turn in SI paperwork on time (will discuss forms later) Cc you and me via e-mail when absent or having any problem

Your Role as Instructor Allow your SI Leader to promote SI at start of each class meeting (roughly 5 min.) Meet with your Leader 30 minutes per week (to be arranged) Discuss progress of SI sessions, brainstorm ideas for attendance, share creative ways to practice course content Sign off on SI Leader Weekly Time Log (verifies attendance in your class and that he/she has met with you each week) Allow Leader to survey class: Beginning of term: for input on available times for SI sessions End of term: for input on effectiveness of SI Fill out 5-min. evaluation form of your Leader at semester’s end Avoid suggesting that SI is only for weak/remedial students Keep in touch with me: ex. discouraged over SI attendance or SI Leader is frequently late to class

My Role as Supervisor Help your recommended Leaders navigate the hiring process. Train all Leaders in effective group learning strategies. Teach Leaders professionalism, which includes turning in required paperwork on time. Meet with Leaders regularly to discuss their sessions. Conduct a formal observation of each Leader. Provide study tools and various resources for Leaders to use during sessions. Encourage Leaders to continually promote their SI sessions Send you reports on student attendance (automated & upon request)-see next slide with sample Maintain frequent contact with you throughout the term

A Sample SI Attendance Report

SI Session Scheduling Information Two 1-hr. segments weekly per course section; we have 5 partitioned study areas available to us (seat 6-13 students) PLUS any “unused” classroom space—see next slide with sample SI room schedule SI Leader chooses best times based on student surveys or what openings remain in our 5 areas Best times have proven to be either right before/after class Students from other course sections (same subject) can attend any SI Leaders’ sessions for that course subject Once set, schedule remains fairly fixed throughout term—builds routine and predictability, which encourages consistent attendance

Sample SI Room Schedule (posted next to each room)

SI Master Schedule for Spring 2017 By the end of Week 3—posted at bottom of main SI website www.bakersfieldcollege.edu/si

Important Forms You Will Encounter Your Leader MUST turn in 2 forms per week to me—please help me hold them accountable! **SI Leader Weekly Time Log Sign this weekly to verify hours—Leader turns in to me every Monday by 5 pm for previous week SI Session Plan SI Leader turns in 1 per week to me, also due Mondays by 5 pm SI Leader Contract FYI Leaders will sign at 1st training; forms the basis for disciplinary action if/when a Leader fails to comply with any aspect of agreement; weekly missing paperwork warnings are issued via e-mail to Leader and cc’d to you, so you are aware if a problem is emerging. At 5 warnings, Leader is in jeopardy of being dismissed (I consult with you 1st)

Quiz What makes SI unique (in other words, different from traditional tutoring)? What’s the one professorial task you are not permitted to have your SI Leader do? What should you be prepared for your SI Leader to do at the start of every class meeting? Why is it crucial that you, as the instructor, be aware of your Leader’s SI contract and obligations to the program? It is very important that SI Leaders act professionally at all times…what should you do if your Leader starts to falter (i.e. frequently tardy, eating in class, etc.)? When can you expect SI Session Attendance reports from me? Which form is the only one you need to worry about signing weekly? What is the single most effective action you can take during the first week of school to increase the likelihood that your students will at least give SI a try?

Don’t forget our super-helpful SI Faculty webpage—it’s your one-stop shop for all things SI… https://www.bakersfieldcollege.edu/si/faculty TO WRAP UP: *Several testimonials on how SI has impacted your students, your own teaching, your outlook? I absolutely LOVE to hear from you. *Lingering questions? *Advice for new instructors? *Ways to make the program even more powerful?
