English – Key aims for Year.2 Children to make predictions and explain understanding on what has been read. Making links/connections to their own experiences Participate in discussion, role play and debate Sequencing events and retelling To consider and evaluate viewpoints Writing diary entries in role and taking on the role of a character to make inferences/ ask questions To make meaning of their writing – to know why they are writing and who the writing is for

Reading - Aims Read fluently using decoding skills, blending and sounding out words Comprehending what has been read by discussing and clarifying the meaning of words and phrases and answering questions about a text/finding information from a text To make predictions, ask and answer questions, understand the structure of non-fiction books and explain and discuss understanding of a range of reading

Maths Place value – - Consolidation of representing numbers through denes - Secure partitioning of numbers into tens and ones - Comparing numbers to 100 when numbers have either a different tens digit or the tens digit is the same

Maths – Key areas (up to February half term) Numbers to 100 - Place value - Number bonds 30 + 7 = 37 - Making number patterns Addition and subtraction Multiplication and division of 2, 5 and 10 Length, mass and temperature Picture graphs

Science Uses of everyday materials (current topic) Animals including humans Plants Living things and their habitats

RE Beginnings Term.1 (Recognise stories from the bible, say what I wonder about in RE and recognise some ways that religion is lived out by believers.) Domestic Church Signs and symbols Preparations (Stories from the bible) Liturgy assembly (every 7 weeks)

Upcoming tests SATS - May Grammar punctuation and spelling Reading – 2 reading comprehension papers Maths.1 Arithmetic (four operations and fractions) Maths.2 Reasoning (problem solving) Year 2 results are not published. These are for the school to assess progress at the end of KS1 and to enable children to be prepared for KS2. Lots of practise will be undertaken in key areas, although tests are not designed to put pressure on the children.

Homework Spellings will be issued every Friday, children will be tested the following Friday. Maths daily/every other day. Topic - To research at home using library books/the internet.

General info Appointments (Please write in to arrange an appointment if you have any questions, concerns or queries), or pop in after school to see me/email the school office before school if urgent. Parents evenings (5 min appointments towards the end of the half term).

Trips – (aiming for half termly) Booked - Bromley Fire Station (Tuesday 4th October) – Autumn.1 Museum of London – Fire Exhibition – Autumn.2 Opportunity for learning outside the classroom, making meaning of real life experiences.

Handouts Common exception words (tricky words) – please practise with your child. Handwriting – Cursive script (upper and lower case)

Good to be green Children will be given 2 warnings for minor behaviour issues, before turning their card to yellow on the third instance. Major behaviour issues will result in their cards being turned straight over to red. Classroom code – agreed and designed as a whole class, to ensure children are doing the right thing in school.
