Group 3: Library Culture Committee 6. Cultivate an organizational culture that can equip staff with the required skills to transform the library Group 3: Library Culture Committee

Proposal: To develop aggressive; innovative; team, people, and outcome-oriented staff who will support the mission of the library. To achieve these characteristics, we will Know ourselves Set our minds to achieve our goals Build capacities/capabilities/competencies Re-brand ourselves Collaborate

1. Know ourselves Internal External Skills inventory Revisit current job description/survey staff Review organizational structure Retreat (withdraw & look at what is happening) External Survey library patrons, faculty Environment scanning/group discussions Benchmarking with the rest of the world (peer institutions), visiting other libraries

Rationale for the suggestion Understand the people in WUL (hardworking, knowledgeable, committed) Define the importance of library as perceived by staff and university Identify the challenges How will these transform the library Staff performance is a key to achieve excellence

Indicators to monitor success Resource Implication Hire consultant if budget allows (expert on Organization Development) Expenses on meetings, trips Expenses on surveys Indicators to monitor success Result of the surveys Evaluation of the current organizational status List of skills available (Technical Skills, Human Skills, Conceptual Skills)

2. Set our minds to achieve our goals Define library’s purpose (unique strengths) Identify pivot points for change Identify barriers Propose innovations Team Building/Goal setting Strategic Planning

Rationale for the suggestions To strengthen the relationship (work together – joint performance) How will these transform the library Staff will own the new direction because they are part of its development (staff are connected to the library’s mission)

Indicators to monitor success Resource Implication Budget for evaluations, meetings, group discussions, team building activities Indicators to monitor success New goals, new ideas Identify gaps between current job and the needs required (new posts, promotions) Identify staff who can be leaders Measure culture changes (self assessment, opinions, business indicators, financial) Identify barriers

3. Build our capacities/capabilities/competencies Attend skills and leadership trainings (including communication skills, customer relation, team spirit and other) Join collaboration project, learn to negotiate, be creative/innovate, learn technology, and project management Develop reward system that will inspire staff

Rationale for the suggestion Staff with skills needed by the library To have staff that will support Actions 1-5 How will these transform the library Improve work performance/services provided to the patrons and community Change the image of the library from inward looking and individualistic to welcoming and ready to take the challenge

Indicators to monitor success Resource Implication Funds for trainings, and other capacity building activities Indicators to monitor success Improved programs, facilities, and good working spaces for the staff Number of trainings attended Less complaints (from patrons/staff) Aggressive and innovative staff

4. Re-Branding Future directions (think out of the box) Get inter-connected -- internal communication (newsletter, coaching, mentoring) Continuous re-training, skills upgrading (sustain competitive advantage) Review performance appraisal system Let the University know
