What’s PLTW Biomedical Science? 2016-2017 School Year Mr. Scott Copley Canvas Access: my.pltw.org Email: copleys@corralesis.org 1” 3-ring binder We’ll keep this in the room to access autopsy reports and resource material as well as lab reports. This course sets the foundation for understanding Biomedical Sciences. We will begin with a Forensics unit surrounding the death of Anna Garcia. We will then explore nutrition and diabetes, genetics and sickle cell disease, heart anatomy and function, and finally infectious diseases. You will learn how to act as a Biomedical Scientist, developing important laboratory skills in addition to your content understanding. CIS g-mail accounts We organize a folder in the drive around the mystery to develop theories as to the manner of Anna’s death. The instructor reserves the right to deal with specific late work and make-up work issues on a case by case basis. The general rules that will apply are as follows: If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to check Canvas for the work you missed and ask questions or arrange a time to make up any lab work. I stay after school almost daily and come early to help. You have the same number of days you missed to make up the work After that number of days have passed, you will receive a zero in the grade book if you haven’t made up work. Latex or Nitrile Gloves Get a box of 100 in your size so we have plenty for lab work Canvas LMS This class has no textbook. Instead, all curriculum is online and we use web resources and lab work to learn. You can access the curriculum at my.pltw.org or using the Canvas by Instructure app. Canvas is the Learning Management System used . We have laptops for use in class. Use only your ASSIGNED laptop and stay on appropriate sites. Additional Supplies We will build models and complete wet labs and make presentations throughout the year. If able, please bring Modeling supplies (beads, pipe cleaners, pool noodles, etc) The best way to stay connected is by logging onto Canvas daily, regardless of whether you are at school. Set up notifications in Canvas so that you receive texts or e-mails when something is graded or an announcement is made. If you need help, feel free to Canvas message me or e-mail me with your needs. What’s PLTW Biomedical Science? Scan the QR code below to find out! Focus; eyes and ears on the instruction method. i.e. Speaker, lab, presentation. Verbally contribute / speak when recognized. Respect the learning communities right to learn. Just do it, your work. If you have a smartphone or tablet please download these free apps—Canvas and Inspiration maps app. We will use them in class and you will be able to access from your mobile device. 7-8 5-6 3-4 1-2
