JMMC & RI, Thrissur, Kerala AIM The study aims to understand the thoughts, apprehensions & view points on the future of Transfusion Medicine as a Post graduate course from among the Post graduate Residents and from those who have passed out and are working now. JMMC & RI, Thrissur, Kerala

JMMC & RI, Thrissur, Kerala MATERIALS & METHODS A questionnaire was sent to more than 200 residents (PGs & Consultants post IHBT) Consent taken The data was collected and analyzed A total of 80 residents consented and responded JMMC & RI, Thrissur, Kerala

JMMC & RI, Thrissur, Kerala RESULTS 85% of the respondents : PGs Mean age : 30 yrs 75% - Females 98% - Parents & 77% Spouses - Not Doctors 85 % - Took MBBS due to passion 85 % - Interested in pursuing a Clinical PG 97 % - Very poor TM Training in MBBS 51% -Came to know about TM from Seniors 8% -Came to know about TM at the time of counseling 65% -Took TM -It’s a new course & has a good future 90% -There is need for such a course JMMC & RI, Thrissur, Kerala

JMMC & RI, Thrissur, Kerala RESULTS 93% The course requires a unified nomenclature 95% Felt that the improvements will take time 61% Felt that saturation will set in 5 years 76 % Probably select TM if given a second chance 63% TM specialists are consulted at times of need But only 23 % of their suggestions were considered SUGGESTIONS GIVEN BY THE WORKING GROUP To make separate MCI form for inspection purposes To include MD TM PERSONS IN LICENSING AUTHORITY 75 % felt that such a PG program will not persist beyond 25 years, if the current scenario prevails JMMC & RI, Thrissur, Kerala

Qualification of the Blood Bank Medical Officer As per the D&C act MD Pathology or MD Transfusion Medicine MBBS with ONE YEAR experience in blood bank If an MBBS person with training can be a medical officer in charge of a Blood Bank, then what is the need for a 3 Year Post Graduate MD Degree ? (Due to discrepancy in the nomenclature ,persons with MD IHBT were not granted permission by the DCI) Recommendation Gradually Blood bank Medical Officer should be persons with MD in TM ONLY JMMC & RI, Thrissur, Kerala

S No Country Transfusion Medicine Training 1 Brazil TM is part of Hematology Residency Program 2 Iran TM is Part of Pathology & sub specialty of Hematology 3 USA TM is Part of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Can be done as Subspecialty post Hematology & also other surgical courses 4 Sweden TM is a Part of Clinical Immunology Residency Program 5 Germany TM is part of Clinical immunology Residency Program 6 Malaysia TM was a Part of Laboratory Medicine , Recently TM is introduced 7 Korea TM is a Part of Laboratory Medicine 8 Israel TM is a Sub specialty of Hematology 9 France TM is Super specialty Post Hematology or Internal Medicine It includes Hematology & Transfusion Medicine 10 Netherlands TM is super specialty post Medicine/Pediatrics Sub specialty of Hematology 11 Japan/ Indonesia No Formal program So without Hematology, Transfusion Medicine Cannot survive JMMC & RI, Thrissur, Kerala
