EVERYDAY MATH AT CANTON ELEMENTARY OVERVIEW AND BACKGROUND OF THE PROGRAM SELECTION PROCESS GOALS OF THE PROGRAM EMPHASIS OF THE PROGRAM CONTENT OF THE PROGRAM ASSESSMENT WEBSITE

OVERVIEW AND BACKGROUND Everyday Math evolved from research done by the University of Chicago School of Mathematics where researchers: Examined successful curriculum from around the world Explored young children’s learning styles Assessed actual uses of mathematics by people in their everyday lives and jobs

UCSMP Research Findings Typical US mathematics curriculums are arithmetic-driven, slow-paced with isolated skills and broad without depth of content International studies show US students learn less mathematics than students in other countries Children are capable of learning more mathematics in richer curriculum

SELECTION OF THE PROGRAM PRESENTATION TO STAFF DURING THE FALL OF 2005 MATH COMMITTEE VISITS TO DISTRICTS WHO HAVE BEEN USING EVERYDAY MATH PILOTING BY SOME TEACHERS IN 2005-2006 SCHOOL YEAR

Everyday Math is a complete Kindergarten through 6th grade curriculum that enriches the mathematical experiences of children. Goals of the Program: To substantially raise expectations with respect to the amount and range of mathematics that children can learn To provide materials for children and support for teachers that enable them to meet these higher expectations (TRPs, manipulative kits, game kits, on-line services)

EMPHASIS OF THE PROGRAM Within the content of Everyday Math, emphasis is placed on: Establishing links from past experience Discussing and sharing ideas Using and comparing equivalent expressions Expressing numbers in context by including units Learning about the reversibility of most things

Content by Strands Numeration Operations Patterns, Functions, Algebra Everyday Math students study important concepts over consecutive years through a variety of curricular formats: Numeration Operations Patterns, Functions, Algebra Geometry Measurement and Reference Frames Data and Chance

ASSESSMENT Students are assessed in a variety of ways: Ongoing Assessment Product Assessment Periodic Assessment Skill expectations are rated as Beginning, Developing, or Secure
