MATH 2413 Summer 2017 12 – 3:15 MTuWTh Room 382 Professor Thomas Jay

Student Assignments All homework is assigned in WebAssign. You will be registered in WebAssign on the first day and you will have two weeks to decide which option you wish to choose regarding the purchase of WebAssign. At the end of the two week grace period, you will only be able to continue working in WebAssign by purchasing a code. Homework will count 18.75% of your final grade. There will four tests with no make-up tests given. If you miss a test, the average of your other test grades will be used for that test grade.   Assessments The semester grade will be determined as follows: 18.75% for homework, 56.25% for tests (lowest grade dropped), 25% for the final exam. Resources: Free tutoring is available in the math tutoring center. Additional help is also available through Student Support Services. Students can get free assistance, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in Math, English and other subjects, at hccs.upswing.io. Typically, posted questions are answered by an HCC tutor or faculty within 24 hours (usually under 6 hours). There are also several online math resources that you can find with an internet search. CalcChat.com provides step-by-step solutions to all odd-numbered exercises. LarsonCalculus.com has videos, proofs, examples, and other esources. A student solutions manual is not necessary. You may also find information on the Learning Web site accessible through your specific HCCS campus website. WebAssign also contains help. Limits There are three ways to determine a limit. Numerically Graphically Analytically

Numerical method X -0.1 -0.01 -0.001 0.001 0.01 0.1 f(x) .2911 .2889 .2887 .2884 .2863

x 1.9 1.99 1.999 2.001 2.01 2.1 f(x) x 1.9 1.99 1.999 2.001 2.01 2.1 f(x) 2.95 2.995 2.9995 3.001 3.01 x 1.9 1.99 1.999 2.001 2.01 2.1 f(x) 2.95 2.995 2.9995 3.0001 3.001 3.01 x 1.9 1.99 1.999 2.001 2.01 2.1 f(x) 2.95 2.995 2.9995 3.01 x 1.9 1.99 1.999 2.001 2.01 2.1 f(x) 2.95 2.995 2.9995 x 1.9 1.99 1.999 2.001 2.01 2.1 f(x) 2.95 x 1.9 1.99 1.999 2.001 2.01 2.1 f(x) 2.95 2.995

Graphical Method

Analytical method Usually, the analytical method, or algebraic method, involves substituting the value of the variable into the expression and evaluating. Sometimes that does not yield a limit. In this example if we substitute 0 for x we end up with 0/0. Since division by 0 is not allowed, this does not give us the desired limit. We will discuss later how to do this specific example analytically.

Simplifying the expression when

Common Types of Behavior Associated with Nonexistence of a Limit

Definition of Limit

For a given you can choose That means Which proves that the limit is as claimed.
