US International Involvement K Stafford MBMS 2015

International Involvement International Conflict-happens when countries disagree. International Cooperation - happens when countries have something to gain by working together to solve problems. Countries may cooperate in order to avoid going to war or to manage a resource.

World War I 1915 the British cruise ship the Lusitania was attacked and sunk by a German submarine Over 1,000 people are killed including 128 American Citizens American Citizens demand the US do something US Joins World War I

World War I War was fought between the Allied Forces(US, England, France) and the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy) The Allied Forces won the war in 1918

World War II December 7th 1941 Japan bombs the US Navy base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii War fought between the Allies(US, England, Russia) and the Axis(Germany, Italy, Japan)

World War II War had been going on for several months before the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the US joining the Allies Germany Surrendered in May 1945 and Japan in August 1945 after the US dropped 2 atomic bombs on Japan

Korean War 1950 North Korea invades South Korea UN steps in to help backed by mostly American Troops North Korea supported by the Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China South Korea backed by the US, England and the UN

Korean War Originally the UN and the US are just defending South Korea but soon the US decides to try and rid North Korea of Communism 1953 Treaty ends war with both countries being independent of each other. Creates the 38th Parallel Demilitarization Zone 2 mile wide swath between the countries

Vietnam War US trying to stop spread of communism joins war and supports South Vietnam China supports North Vietnam US Never officially declares war.

Vietnam War 1975 North Vietnamese army gains control of South Vietnams capitol North Vietnam wins war and country becomes communist.

Bay of Pigs 1961 US sends trained Cuban exiles back to Cuba to over throw Fidel Castro’s communist government US was concerned because Cuba had strong ties with the Soviet Union

Bay of Pigs Invasion failed had severe consequences for the US US looks weak Castro’s government became stronger Cuba looks to the Soviet Union for help and guidance

Cuban Missile Crisis 1962 Soviet Union tries to place nuclear missiles on Cuba These missiles were long range and could attack anywhere in the US 13 Tense Days of negotiations follow

Cuban Missile Crisis Publicly a victory President Kennedy and the USA Russia agreed to remove missiles from Cuba and the USA agreed to not invade Cuba again and to remove missiles from Turkey and Italy

Iran Hostage Crisis 1979 the US Embassy in Iran is taken over by force 66 hostages were taken President Carter unsuccessfully tried negotiations, economic sanctions and military actions all failed.

The Iran Hostage Crisis 1981 Ronald Reagan’s Inauguration day, the US unfreezes about 1 Billion in Iranian assets Hostages were freed after 444 Days

Gulf War I Iraq under Saddam Hussein invades Kuwait saying that Kuwait had illegally pumped oil from an Iranian oil Field UN says Iraq must leave Kuwait US sends troops to Saudi Arabia to protect oil fields there

Gulf War I Iran doesn’t leave Kuwait by UN deadline US launches Operation Desert Storm US leads a coalition that successfully defeats Husain's troops but extensive damage was done to Kuwait and Iraq While this was a Military Victory, Hussein was not removed from power and actively tried to break the peace treaty.

Gulf War II After 9/11 President Bush accuses Iraq of developing Weapons of Mass Destruction, which violates the peace treaty of the 1st Gulf War US leads coalition and gains control of the country

Gulf War II Since 2009 President Obama has reduced troops in Iraq The country has tried to established a Democracy but it hasn’t been successful US troops are still stationed there today.
