The Moon

What are the different phases??? New moon First quarter moon Last quarter moon Full moon Waxing Crescent Waning Crescent Waxing Gibbous Waning Gibbous Lets sing about the phases

New Moon The new moon is the phase of the moon when the moon is not visible from Earth, because the side of the moon that is facing us is not being lit by the sun. What does the Moon, Sun, and Earth look like during the New Moon phase? Draw what you think their representation looks like, then use the following link to draw the actual representation. Alignment

Full Moon Birthday Moon The phase of the Moon in which it is visible as a fully illuminated disk. This phase occurs when the Moon is on the opposite side of Earth as the Sun and is not in Earth's shadow. Birthday Moon The month Mrs. Parks was born the moon is called a Long Night Moon what month was she born? Now figure out what the name of the moon is for each of your birthdays.

Can you tell me how long the first quarter moon is visible??? A first quarter moon shows half of its lighted hemisphere – half of its day side – to Earth. Can you tell me how long the first quarter moon is visible???

Waxing Crescent At this moon phase, the Earth, moon and sun are located nearly on a line in space. If they were more precisely on a line, as they are at new moon, we wouldn’t see the moon. The moon would travel across the sky during the day, lost in the sun’s glare. Look at the picture in this link and as a group write me a paragraph story about the child and moon. picture this

Last Quarter Moon The Last quarter moon is basically the precise point of the Moon parading the Sun on the final arc of the lunar process. At this point the moon looks half-lit or illuminated. The moon takes on the shape of a pie sliced in half. The Last quarter moon rises at around the time of midnight, and comes to its peak during dawn. It sets at noontime. A Last quarter moon reveals itself three weeks after the new moon occurs. The moon is positioned at a right angle to a line situated right between the Sun and Earth. The moon at this point is three fourths of its path around the Earth. I want you to use the following link to do this activity. Start the timer and then randomly press stop and record what the number was and then find the corresponding phase. If you land on the Last quarter phase your group will receive 2 bonus points. Can you get some bonus points?

Waning Crescent the moon is nearly on a line with the Earth and sun again, the day hemisphere of the moon is facing mostly away from us once more. We see only a slender fraction of the moon’s day side: a crescent moon.

Waxing Gibbous This moon phase comes between one and two weeks after new moon The moon has moved in its orbit so that it’s now relatively far from the sun in our sky. A waxing gibbous moon rises during the hours between noon and sunset. It sets in the wee hours after midnight.

Waning Gibbous Only that it can surprise you if you happen to be out late in the evening. It rises eerily some hours after sunset, glowing red like a full moon when it’s near the horizon. Sometimes it looks like a misshapen clone of a full moon. Can you complete the lunar phases?

Lets quiz ourselves!!!! Our moonabiliity

We are going to read a cute fun book to end this Unit!
