Capstone Presentation 1 Team 4: Jon Reisner Aleks Plavsic Chad Due John Schwittay Jeff Mueller September 21, 2006

Project Proposal #1: IR Sensor System for Aquatic Neurobehavioral Research Power Supply, IR Transmitter, IR Receiver, Filter, Feeder System, Microprocessor, RS232 Port Project is designed to test the effects of positive reinforcement in a controlled habitat for fish. Upon the visual stimulus of a green light, the fish will be prompted to cross the infra-red barrier releasing the food at the opposing end of the tank. Advantages of Project for Team #4: Previous research and experience in optics Prior microprocessor design and buildup Knowledge of control devices

Project Proposal #2: Thermal Controlled Automated Blinds Project is designed to control the operation of window blinds based on a circuit’s response to the strength of the light outdoors and the temperature. Blinds will open and close automatically in an attempt to conserve and control energy consumption. Project should utilize an AC power supply, photocell circuit, temperature sensor, comparator, logic, stepper motor Advantages of Project for Team #4: Previous experience and interest in logic Previous experience in temperature sensor design AC/DC Motors and Control experience

Project Proposal #3: Programmable LED Sign Photocell Circuit, Comparator Circuit, Stepper Motor Circuit, Stepper Motor, Light Adjustable Logic, Power Supply Project is designed to display information that has been inputted by the user. Design would allow for both display of information as well as how information is displayed on sign Advantages of Project for Team #4: Practical application for conserving energy Previous experience and interest in logic Previous experience in temperature sensor design

Selection Matrix – Average team scores 0-100

Project Selection Overall Selection Process Project Advantages: Provides an opportunity to design a product based on customer requirements Project will be funded up to $1000 Design will utilize strengths of team Project will be original and free from competitive market Project Risks: Potential for design conflict of interest Working prototype must be within tolerances and design specification as it will be implemented in customer’s research

Project Selection Overall Selection Process Rejection Process Previous projects proposed did not support the necessary amount of blocks required Projects rejected did not offer the challenge or complexity for senior design Initial ideas had been previously attempted by senior design groups at other colleges Team Decision Team completed the selection matrix and chose to move forward with the design of the Fish Tank Apparatus Team unanimously agreed on the selection of the final design

Proposed Product: IR Sensor System for Aquatic Neurobehavioral Research This product is designed to assist in the research of neurobehavioral studies of fish, through the use of positive reinforcement Project will be used to collect data for study at the Great Lakes Institute System will serve as a training device that will record data used to identify neurobehavioral activity of fish The project will be the first attempt to collect data for aquatic neurobehavioral studies No known products are currently on the market This product is developed for use in water and marine research

Risks and Problem Areas Infrared beams’ transmission through water and potential damage to specimen’s (fish) tissue (i.e. eyes). Potential long lead time for IR transmitters (laser diodes), IR receivers, display, and stepper motors. Possible need for placement of IR sensing block inside the fish tank Possible prototyping issue with the fish tank and water Potential need for LabVIEW (expensive)
