2015 NSBOA code updates Part 9 and Part 3

Code Changes- Part 9, Housing & Small Buildings Volume 2 of the National Building Code is now essentially Part 9 including Appendix A. STAIRS 9.8.3.1. Permitted configurations (1) (c) Spiral stairs now permitted as long as they comply with 9.8.4.7 2010 2015

Code Changes- Part 9, Housing & Small Buildings Volume 2 of the National Building Code is now essentially Part 9 including Appendix A. The minimum and maximum rise for stairs remains unchanged. 2015 2015 2015

Code Changes- part 9, Housing & Small Buildings Volume 2 of the National Building Code is now essentially Part 9 including Appendix A. 3.4.6.9 (2) A curved flight used as an exit shall have: (a) Handrail on each side (b) A minimum run of 240 mm (9 ½) (c) A run not less than 288 mm (11’’) when measured at a point 300 mm (12”) from the center line of the handrail at the narrow end of the tread (d) An inside radius that is not less than twice the stair width

Code Changes- part 9, Housing & Small Buildings Stair run has changed Minimum run for private stairs was 210 mm ( 8 ¼ inches) in 2010 NBC, now changed to 255 mm (10 inches) in 2015 NBC. 2015 Note: The increased minimum run of the stairs will affect the size of the stairwell opening required to maintain the minimum headroom requirement of 6’4 ¾ “. As well, a 2 x 12 may be required for a stair stringer as it is necessary to maintain a minimum 3 ½ inch uncut portion of the stringer.

Code Changes- part 9, Housing & Small Buildings Previous Code- Referred to “Angled” treads New Code- Refers to “Tapered” treads 2010 2015 Note: The increased minimum run of the stairs will affect the size of the stairwell opening required to maintain the minimum headroom requirement of 6’4 ¾ “. As well, a 2 x 12 may be required for a stair stringer as it is necessary to maintain a minimum 3 ½ inch uncut portion of the stringer.
