Review and Discuss DRAFT Older Road Users Action Plan

Older Road Users Strategies Our Action Plan has 4 “buckets” 1. Education 2. Licensing 3. Alternative Transportation 4. Infrastructure

4 Action Plan Goals Reduce the number of fatalities among drivers age 65 and older from 229 in 2016 to 220 in 2020. Reduce the number of fatalities among pedestrians age 65 and older from 13 in 2016 to 12 in 2020.

4 Action Plan Goals Reduce the number of fatalities among bicyclists age 65 and older from 5 in 2016 to 4 in 2020. Increase the number of Ohioan’s age 65 and older who have access to alternative transportation options.

Education Objective — Ensure older road users, family members, caregivers and others who interact with the older population are educated on the safety and mobility needs of this population.

Education Strategy 1: Increase awareness and availability of information, resources and tools to improve older road user safety and mobility.

Education Strategy 2: Improve public policy to increase older road user safety and mobility.

Licensing Objective— Improve the processes and procedures that will allow older road users to drive for as long as it is safe to do so.

Licensing Strategy 1: Review national licensing standards and practices, and make recommendations on the associated procedures and processes based on other state standards and best practices.

Licensing Strategy 2: Strengthen the assessment process to evaluate a driver’s ability to drive safely.

Licensing Strategy 3: Increase the knowledge of medical providers, law enforcement and licensing personnel on the recognition, assessment and reporting of older, at-risk drivers.

Alternative Transportation Objective— Ensure options are available for older road users once they transition from driving.

Alternative Transportation Strategy 1: Develop and distribute information on available alternative transportation options in Ohio.

Alternative Transportation Strategy 2: Expand opportunities for older road user mobility and the ability to age in place.

Infrastructure Objective— Improve roadways to better accommodate older road users and increase their safety.

Infrastructure Strategy 1: Implement roadway improvements that compensate for impacts of aging on safe driving.

Infrastructure Strategy 2: Implement improvements to make walking and bicycling safer for older road users.

Next Steps • Finalizing the Action Plan - Send to group by August - Present to SHSP Statewide Steering Committee in late August
