HydroNET and Real Time Radar Rainfall Data for improved hydrology, flood forecasting and flood warning

Share your water information with us Too much to do and not enough time!? Give us an overview about what you have achieved Funders Stakeholder Can my house flood? Do you have information that we can use in our project Community Consultant When will the cyclone hit? Will we get flooded? How much? Can you give me a monthly report on the water system status Can you give me information about water levels? Explain the problem of there being lots of data and information, but difficulty in getting it and then making it available to all those that require various questions answered. All takes time and manual intervention from you. Colleagues Board members Partner

I can focus now on making the right decisions with my partners Funders Stakeholder Consultant Community So HydroNET links to the various data sources available and gives the various professionals their own personalised dashboards with the information they particularly need to make decisions, in real time, automatically. Colleagues Board members Partner

NTERNATIONAL software – LOCAL partners – TAILORED solutions An open platform developed with and for water professionals. SaaS solution: An internet connection is all the infrastructure you need. Live, Personlised dashboards to support smart water management decisions. NTERNATIONAL software – LOCAL partners – TAILORED solutions

Conducted user requirement analysis HydroNET Users today The new insights and experience gained by these decisions can be transferred into knowledge. The HydroNET Water Control Room can transfer data into knowledge. HydroNET is a decision support system that provides the right information at the right time and empowers water professionals in making the right decisions in a transparent way and in sharing this information with stakeholders to create awareness. (c) HydroLogic

VIEW, combine and analyse WATCH keep an eye on your water system, CONNECT internal and external data (consult) REPORT information to stakeholders ALERT, timely alerts and reduced impact The HydroNET platform is currently used by more than 2000 water professionals and 23 partners in 8 different countries.   HydroNET: Enables partners to collaborate in various dimensions: - Golden triangle: public – private partners – knowledge institutes - The information chain: data owners – application developers – end-users - Various disciplines (food, water, energy) - Various countries Scalable approach, easily add: - new data - new tools - new partners - new countries - new disciplines Transparent and accountable - Easy to replicate - Use of remote sensing data (c) HydroLogic

Improved weather information for less cost and effort RainWatch HydroNET RainWatch: Improved weather information for less cost and effort

Why RainWatch? Properly install and maintain rain gauges is difficult Model calibration results are poor Rainfall can still misses the gauges Many people, many needs Why RainWatch?

Don’t miss a rainfall event Why radar? Rain gauge (10.9 mm) Don’t miss a rainfall event

How does radar work? What are radar measurements? Measurement of encountered obstacles in terms of reflectivity Usual resolution 1 x 1 km (or 1° x 1 km), every 5 minutes, 0.5 dBZ steps Important Indirect measurement Instantaneous measurement Measurement at certain hight Ground check essential

From raw to calibrated radar Radar data quality control and correction Speckle and clutter (e.g. wind mills, towers, mountains) Radial effects (blockage) Other spurious effects Rain gauge data quality control and gap definition No multi-day sums No large gaps No wrong zero measurements (hidden gaps) Radar data adjustment to raingauge data

Benefits of Radar in HydroNET Rainfall is the most principal factor in accurate modelling WMO minimum requirements are 1 gauge / 20km2 Radar in HydroNET Provides: High spatial distribution of 1km X 1km; High temporal availability of 6 minute intervals;

RainWatch provides the information you need HydroNET also provides easy online access to: SaaS solution BoM and other weather forecasts and stations Other global rain products (eg. ECMWF, GFS) Historical, Observed and Forecast data Forecast Ensemble data At the click of a button! HydroNET provides the tools to enable water professionals to Use the numbers behind the pictures Export to model input files Upload shape files for catchment averages Generate rainfall reports Download long time series Make personalised dashboards Calibration with your rainfall gauges in real time to provide a blended dataset of both sources; Ease of use (i.e. RADAR readily accessible via the HydroNET platform); Improved weather information; reduced costs. Same cost as 2 to 3 automatic rain gauges

Using Rainfall Gauges alone will undoubtedly require a very intensive and expensive installation, operations, maintenance and IT costs. RainWatch and radar offers a very dense spatial and temporal network without the IT hassle and O&M costs, at a cheaper price, quickly and easily.
