Structure Lead or Hook : Grabs the reader’s attention Lead or Hook Possibilities: Anecdote – short story that makes a point Question – usually rhetorical which tries to involve the reader Starting statistic or fact Description – to put the reader in a certain place or time
Structure Thesis Statement States which side of the issue you are on
Structure Concession The opposite side of the argument Makes this point quickly and then moves on Only gives weak facts about this side
Structure Supporting Details One paragraph per detail At least THREE details Put details in order of weakest to the STRONGEST Uses facts rather than opinions (they are more effective)
Structure Conclusion Wrap up by reinforcing/restating the side that you agree with If a problem, suggest a solution Remind reader of your hook/lead from the beginning
Overall Good Editorials should be between 250-500 words in length Must be on a controversial topic that has TWO sides (for and against) Sources must be cited Topic must be approved by Mrs. Biddle Needs to include a title and By Line at the top Should be typed
