Workshop background (1/3) The future operations of new large aircraft (e.g. A380) in Low Visibility Conditions have raised some concerns in past five years Are the current practices based upon the vacation of ILS sensitive area before a landing still valid with these new aircraft? Are wider sensitive areas necessary? Are existing propagation signal model appropriate?

Workshop background (2/3) Several studies have been conducted to assess the effect of such new large aircraft on the ILS signal performances They were based upon various simulation models and the results were not necessarily coherent There is a general agreement on the fact that a sophisticated simulation model should provide results closer to the reality This situation has generated a lot of debate regarding the validity of simple simulation model to really assess those impact and the fact that such validity could be scenario dependant

Workshop background (3/3) As a result of the concerns expressed before, a common project has been launched by the several aviation stakeholders to address this issue by conducting several measurement campaigns with an A380 The partners are: ANSPs (DFS, DSNA, LVNL and NATS), Airport operators (Fraport, BAA), Airbus and several experts in simulation tools and methods The results of this project are presented in this workshop

Workshop objectives To provide a first assesment of the impact of new large aircraft on ILS sensitive areas based upon field measurements To provide results of correlation between field measurements and simulations results to validate propagation and A380 models
