Feldman’s Model of Art Criticism From the work of Edmund Burke Feldman, During the late 1960’s and early 70’s 1. Description- List the visual qualities of the work that are obvious and immediate. “What do you see in the artwork”? Include content and subject matter in representational works- Include abstract elements in nonrepresentational pieces. 2. Analysis- Focus on the formal aspects of elements of art, principles of design. “How does the artist create a center of interest? How does the use of color impact the painting?” 3. Interpretation- Propose ideas for possible meaning based on evidence. “What was the artist trying to communicate”? 4. Judgment- Discuss the overall strengths/success/merit of the work. How and why has this work achieved cultural value?

Edvard Munch The Scream 1893 The expressionism movement Oil tempera, and pastel on cardboard 36”x28.9” Oslo, Norway

1.DESCRIPTION a. Painting b. oil, tempera, and pastel on cardboard c. 36’’ x 28.9” d. There are no set shapes. The painting is very curvy and has no defined shapes. e. The axis is vertical towards the bottom because of the man screaming and the brush strokes around him. But towards the top the axis is horizontal because it is literally the horizon behind him. f. The lines are soft and kind of flow together. g. The lines are irregular and thin. The only set lines are the bridge, which is obviously not the focal point of the painting. h. Same shapes- no variety i. The colors are very complementary. The people are wearing dark colors and the sky is red and orange due to the sun setting, and the water is dark blue with light blue strokes within it. j. The texture is simulated, the man screaming is obviously not a perfectly drawn person. He is meant to be unproportional. k. Oslo, Norway in 1893

2.ANALYSIS a. Munch stated that while he was taking a walk at sunset with his two friends beside a fjord, he stopped. His friends went on without him. Describing isolation, he said he heard the enormous scream of nature. B. The person screaming is obviously the focal point of the painting. c. Chaotic and both horizontally and vertically oriented. It’s varied. d. The lines all flow and just fit together and are complementary to the other elements in the painting. e. The light is shadowy and warm. f. Somewhat deep. The painting only goes far back enough to see the people walking and a short length of the bridge. g. There is movement but not really represented, the people are walking away in the background. h. The brush strokes are not smooth and do not flow. The are rough and somewhat at random. i. The size of the person is proportional to the size/ length of the bridge.

3. Interpretation a. Personal isolation can occur even in public with people around. b. Emphasizes that being aware of everything is around but realizing the “scream” of nature. c. He is screaming in nature and realizing the isolation he is in.

4. Judgment a. The theme of isolation, loneliness and depression speaks volumes for the reason for the popularity of "The Scream," uniting all ages and socio-cultural backgrounds. b. He used art nouveau elements in this painting. c. Munch’s art was viewed as controversial and radical because the innovative nature of his paintings.

Summary of the Expressionism movement The early 1900s The expressionism movement started in Germany. The artists wanted to paint using emotion which was a completely new idea of art. The artists tried to convey emotion and meaning rather than reality. In order to express emotion, the subjects are often distorted or exaggerated. At the same time colors are often vivid and shocking.

Interesting Facts About Artist Edvard Munch’s mother died at the age of thirty, when Edvard was only five years old. eight years later, when Munch was only thirteen, his sister also died. his first big break was amidst a scandal. His pieces of art were so radical that one of his shows closed within a week which earned him instant notoriety. He had a number of hospitaliza­tions for respiratory problems, "nerves," and alcoholism. He suffered from chronic depression and many phobias Munch, who was never married, called his paintings his children and hated being separated from him.
