The scroll saw

THE SCROLL SAW A scroll saw is a power tool used to cut intricate sharp curves, angles, internal, and external cuts. The scroll saw is also known as a jig saw. The scroll saw functions similar to a coping saw but it has a finer blade and can cut more easily.

SCROLL SAW SIZE The size of a scroll saw is determined by the horizontal measurement from the blade to the overarm. This distance is called the throat.

SWITCH The switch turns the scroll saw on and off.

SPEED CONTROL The speed control knob adjusts the speed of the saw. Use lower speed on harder materials. Use higher speed on softer materials. You can also slow down the speed when making tight turns.

SROLL SAW BLADE Make sure the blade is installed with the teeth pointing down. Keep your fingers to the side of the blade, never in front of it.

SROLL SAW BLADE The blade is held in place by the lower and upper blade holders.

SCROLL SAW BLADES Scroll saw blades can have pin ends or plain ends. More TPI (Teeth Per Inch) provide a finer cut This is good for soft wood. Less TPI provide a coarser cut. This is good for hard wood. Use the highest number blade for your application. larger blades are more durable.

BLADE TENSIONER Use the blade tensioner to adjust the tension on the blade. The blade must be tensioned properly! With reasonable force the center of the blade should not move more than 1/8″ front to back. Too little tension weakens performance

TABLE The table holds the workpiece.

HOLD DOWN The hold down can be adjusted so that the workpiece does not vibrate or move up and down with the saw blade.

SAFETY RULES AND USEFUL TIPS ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES. Never wear jewelry, long hair, loose clothes, or anything that can become tangled in the saw. Use the hold down to keep the piece from moving up and down with the saw blade. USEFUL TIPS When cutting with the scroll saw hold the stock with both hands. Do not force the stock into the blade. Allow the saw to make the cut. Reduce the speed when making small, intricate cuts. Turn the stock appropriately as you cut curves. Turning too sharply will break the blade. Too slowly will cause the wood to burn. Drill relief holes when making intricate internal cuts.
