AVIATION HISTORY Lecture 9: Military Aviation

What is Military Aviation?? Military aviation is used to attack or defend a country through the sky. There are many types of military aircraft. What are the common types?

Categories of Military Aviation Types of Military Aircraft Reconnaissance Fighters Multi Role Bombers The wide variety of military aircraft includes bombers, fighters, fighter bombers, transports, trainers, and reconnaissance aircraft.

Bombers Bombers are normally larger, heavier, and less maneuverable (moving) than fighter aircraft. They are capable of carrying large payloads of bombs. Designed primarily to attack ground targets by dropping bombs. Example : B-2 Spirit, have stealth capabilities that keep them from being detected by enemy radar. B-2 Spirit,

Fighter aircraft Fighters are fast, highly maneuverable, and capable of destroying enemy aircraft and ground targets. They are capable of carrying a variety of weapons, including machine guns and guided missiles. Designed primarily for attacking other aircraft from a great distance, before the enemy even sees them. Examples of air-superiority fighters include the F-22 Raptor and the MiG-29. MiG-29. WWII fighters include the P-51 Mustang and Bf 109. An example of an interceptor (a fighter designed to take-off and quickly intercept and shoot down enemy planes) would be the MiG-25. F-22 Raptor

Reconnaissance aircraft Reconnaissance aircraft are primarily used to gather intelligence (collect information). They are equipped with photographic, infrared, radar, and television sensors. Reconnaissance aircraft are normally the fastest aircraft in the military, an example being the SR-71 Blackbird. Mach No: 3.3 Service Ceiling 85’000ft SR-71 Blackbird

Multirole aircraft Many aircraft today have a multirole ability. Can be a fighter or a bomber, depending on what the mission calls. Operable at night and in all weather. An example of a multirole plane is the F/A-18 Hornet- an aircraft capable of attacking both ground and aerial targets. F/A-18 Hornet: $94 million First entering service in the 1980s, the twin-engine fighter plane was the U.S.'s first strike fighter — an aircraft capable of attacking both ground and aerial targets. It has seen action in Operation Desert Storm and as the aircraft of the Navy's Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Squadron. The F/A-18 is also used by Canada, Australia, Finland, Kuwait, Malaysia, Spain and Switzerland. F/A-18 Hornet-

Military Aviation in Malaysia What types of military aircraft owned by Malaysia?

Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Royal Malayan Air Force (Tentera Udara Diraja Persekutuan). Today, the RMAF operates a unique mix of modern US, European and Russian made aircraft. (RMAF) operates some 80 combat aircraft such as Hawks, MiG-29N, F/A-18D Hornets and Sukhoi Su-30MKM. Altogether, RMAF has about 200 aircraft of various makes. The history of the Royal Malaysian Air Force started with its formation when the Air Force Ordinance was passed by the Parliament on Monday, June 2nd, 1958 and it was then known as "Tentera Udara Diraja Persekutuan" or Royal Malayan Air Force. Air Commodore A.V.R Johnstsone who was seconded from the Royal Air Force (RAF) was assigned as the adviser to the the Malayan government and later as the first Chief of the Royal Malayan Air Force (RMAF). He was responsible in drawing the blueprint for Malaya's Air Force in terms of organisation, personnel, assets and its regulation.
