ARC Fellowships– Funding in 2013 FUTURE FELLOWSHIPS DISCOVERY EARLY CAREER RESEARCHER AWARDS RSO SUPPORT Dr Gayle Morris – Director, Research Services (RSO)

FUTURE FELLOWSHIPS Objectives: a. attract and retain outstanding mid-career researchers; b. build collaboration across industry and/or research institutions and/or disciplines; c. support research in national priorities across all disciplines that will result in economic, environmental, social, health and/or cultural benefits for Australia; and d. strengthen Australia’s research capacity by supporting innovative, internationally competitive research.

Future Fellowships – Key Facts Fellowships funded for four years full-time For mid-career researchers with between 5 and 15 years research experience since the award of their PhD awarded at one of three salary levels related to current salary level and track record Salary ranges: 2012 (Note - 2013 tba) Level 1: $100,493 plus on-costs Level 2: $121,651 plus on-costs Level 3: $142,806 plus on-costs up to $50,000 of non-salary funding per year may be requested for infrastructure, equipment, travel and relocation costs directly related to the FT research.

FT Eligibility Issues Eligibility Exemption Eligibility Exemption Request submitted in RMS on the ARC Eligibility Exemption Request Form including all supporting documentation Cross-Scheme Eligibility Future Fellow may only receive funding concurrently for a maximum of two Discovery Projects (if two, only one can be as sole CI) Future Fellow will not be permitted to relinquish a CI, Fellow or Centre Personnel role or existing ARC grants to circumvent these limits. Future Fellowship Candidate who holds an ARC or NHMRC Fellowship may apply for a Future Fellowship only in the final awarded year of her/his Fellowship.

FT Eligibility Issues cont. Researchers cannot submit a Future Fellowships Proposal for funding and apply for funding commencing in the same year for: (a) DECRA (b) DORA within a Discovery Projects Proposal (c) an Australian Laureate Fellowships Proposal (d) a Fellowship or other career award on a NHMRC Proposal The Future Fellowship Candidate may not submit more than two Future Fellowship Proposals in the funding rounds between 2009 and 2013. This includes Proposals that have been withdrawn after the closing time of submission of Proposals and Proposals which were deemed ineligible by the ARC.

FT Strategic Statement Strategic Statement by Admin Org: details the existing and/or emerging research strengths of the Admin Org; describes how the FT Candidate aligns with and/or complements the staffing profile of the Admin Org; outlines plans for integration of the FT Candidate into the ongoing activities of the organisation at the end of the Fellowship; and is signed by the DVC(R), Chief Executive Officer or equivalent A guide to preparing the Strategic Statement provided by the RSO to FT13 Candidates. RSO will submit for signature by DVC(R), and will upload the final copy to the application in RMS.

DECRA Objectives The objectives of the DECRA scheme are to: support and advance promising early career researchers; promote enhanced opportunities for diverse career pathways; focus research effort in the National Research Priority areas to improve research capacity and policy outcomes; and enable research and research training in high quality and supportive environments.

DECRA 2014 - key points (based on DE12/13) Period of funding = 3 years full time or up to 6 years part time Max salary funding for applicant = $85k per annum Max non-salary funding = $40k per annum Average amount requested awarded: 2012 = 94.9% Success rate: 2012 = 12.8%

DECRA Supports (identical to DP): Research personnel, including: Research Associates/Assistants Technicians/Lab Attendants PhD stipends Equipment Not large items (LIEF is more appropriate for these) Travel Domestic/International (<$50k) for CIs, PIs, and research support personnel Conferences Project personnel to visit one another Others Access to facilities, Maintenance, Specialised computer equipment & Teaching relief

DECRA Objectives support and advance promising early career researchers; promote enhanced opportunities for diverse career pathways; focus research effort in the National Research Priority areas to improve research capacity and policy outcomes; and enable research and research training in high quality and supportive environments. Five years post PhD or Have had a period of up to 3 years significant career interruption for: - Maternity of parental leave Carer’s responsibility Illness Disruption due to relocation for international post-doctoral studies Unemployment or non-research employment (<3 years)

Organisational Statement re the Research Environment Admin Org must provide a statement in relation to the Research Environment, approved by the DVCR, CEO or equivalent, within the Proposal outlining the: extent to which the DECRA project aligns with the existing and/or emerging research strengths of the Administering Organisation; arrangements under which the DECRA Candidate will be supported in a collaborative research environment; and opportunities for DECRA Candidate to demonstrate the level of independence required to be competitive for research and/or research and teaching pathways at the Admin Org during and after the project. Guide to preparing the Organisational Statement will be provided by the RSO to DE14 Candidates. RSO will submit for DVCR signature and will upload the final copy to the application in RMS.

DECRA does not support Medical and Dental Research Defined as “research and/or training primarily and substantially aimed at understanding or treating a human disease or human health condition”, including: a. late pre-clinical or early human trials of a human therapeutic agent, material or diagnostic test or device; or other interventional research involving humans b. using material collected from human subjects for the primary purpose of studying the underlying causes, prevalence, epidemiology or mode of inheritance of a disease or human condition c. using established animal models or established cell lines for the purpose of studying the underlying causes, prevalence, epidemiology or mode of inheritance of a human disease or human health condition.

GRANT APPLICATIONS: WHAT’S IMPORTANT? Time: allow adequate time: on-going preparation read and become familiar with the guidelines seek reviews from colleagues, particularly those successful in the scheme, and the RSO Good, clear presentation – Make it easy for the reviewer! use the exact ARC titles in application form use sub-sections, diagrams/figures/dot points to break up text and make important points stand out use clear language – avoid acronyms and technical terms Ask yourself the question, is it something I would like to read?
