Server Machines By Brett Gunder COSC 101

Objective Learn what a server is. Learn about different types of servers

What is a Server? Is a computer that delivers information and software to other computers that are linked to it by a network, either through cables or wirelessly. It is built to handle heavier workloads and more applications utilizing server specific hardware to increase productivity.

What is a Server Cont. Example #1: IUP’s Library computers and printers. Example #2: IUP’s H Drive for students.

Types of Servers -Web Servers -File Severs -Email Servers

Web Servers Are computers that deliver web pages. Every web server has an IP address and possibly a domain name. Any computer can be turned into a web server by installing server software and connecting it to the internet.

File Servers Optimized to provide fast access to lots of files to hundreds or thousands of computers. May look like your own computer but have extremely fast high speed network connections, fast hard disks, and multiple processors. Example: IUP’s I Drive

E-Mail Servers Is a computer optimized to handle email. Makes in-house e-mail faster and is used by employees or students within the company or university. Example: Microsoft Outlook

Conclusion Servers are very important for daily use in today’s society. They make things a lot easier and faster. This is especially true in the business world, where you may have a bunch of computers and you have files that need to be shared by employees.
