ABOUT JJ THOMSON DATE OF BIRTH: DECEMBER 18TH, 1856 DATE OF DEATH: AUGUST 30TH, 1940 BRITISH PHYSICIST NOBEL PRIZE WINNER (1906) BORN IN: CHEETHAM HILL, MANCHESTER, ENGLAND EDUCATION: OWENS COLLEGE, TRINITY COLLEGE

ABOUT JJ THOMSON AT THE AGE OF 14 HE WAS ACCEPTED INTO OWENS COLLEGE. THOMSON WON THE TRINITY COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP, ONE OF THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS OF THE COLLEGES AT CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY. AFTER WINNING THE SCHOLARSHIP HE FINISHED SECOND IN HIS CLASS FOR MATHEMATICS. TAUGHT ERNEST RUTHERFORD HE WAS THE FIRST MAN TO SPLIT AN ATOM FOUND THE FIRST PIECES OF EVIDENCE FOR ISOTOPES OF A STABLE ELEMENT

WHY IS THOMSON IMPORTANT? IN 1987 THOMSON SHOWED THAT CATHODE RAYS WERE COMPOSED OF A PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN NEGATIVELY CHARGED PARTICLE, AND THUS HE IS CREDITED WITH THE DISCOVERY AND IDENTIFICATION OF THE ELECTRON. IN A BROADER SENSE HE IS ALSO CREDITED WITH THE DISCOVERY OF THE FIRST SUBATOMIC PARTICLE. ALSO CREDITED WITH FINDING THE FIRST EVIDENCE OF ISOTOPES.

WHY IS THOMSON IMPORTANT? THOMSON DETERMINED THAT ALL MATTER IS MADE UP OF TINY PARTICLES, SMALLER THAN ATOMS. HE ORIGINALLY CALLED THESE PARTICLES 'CORPUSCLES, WHICH ARE NOW KNOWN AS ELECTRONS. HE IS CREDITED WITH DISCOVERING THE ELECTRON, WHICH HE FOUND TO BE A VERY SMALL, NEGATIVELY CHARGED PARTICLE.

WHY IS THOMSON IMPORTANT? THOMSON ALSO FOUND THAT THE ATOM WAS NEUTRAL SO THERE HAD TO BE A BALANCE OF THE NEGATIVE AND POSITIVE CHARGES.

WHAT ARE CATHODE RAYS? CATHODE RAYS ARE GLOWING BEAMS OF LIGHT THAT FOLLOW AN ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE IN A HIGH-VACUUM TUBE. THE CATHODE IS THE NEGATIVELY CHARGED ELECTRON. THE ANODE IS THE POSITIVELY CHARGED ELECTRON.

WHY IS THE CATHODE RAY TUBE IMPORTANT? MOST CATHODE RAY TUBES ARE USED TO DISPLAY IMAGES ON TVS AND COMPUTER MONITORS.
