This term you have the opportunity to engage with your classmates, teachers, assignments, in class with your @sd72.net account. But first, a bit of background...

Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act FIPPA and you! Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act

For students and teachers in BC The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act in BC protects everyone's personal identity and information. It prevents organization and institutions from selling your personal information to marketing firms It also protects your privacy from scammers and criminals FIPPA For students and teachers in BC

By Law... We have an obligation to protect your privacy. If we want to publish your work on the internet (or ask you to do so), we must obtain written ‘informed’ consent first. We cannot store any of your personal information on servers that are located outside of Canada without prior written consent. Office 365 is mainly stored here is Canada but there are products such as Videos, Forms and Power Apps where the information is stored on a US server.

All of these are on foreign servers Mostly in the US ...there are many more!

What is the big deal about foreign servers? By storing files/images/personal information on foreign servers, the data is subject to laws of that foreign country. Example: Any data that is stored on US servers is subject to the US Patriot Act (amongst other US Laws) which allows the US government to search through the data on those servers. Not a problem if you have nothing to hide, but some deem it a breach of privacy.

Furthermore, some providers data-mine to sell information for targeted advertisements:

How many of you currently use one of the previously mentioned services?

Welcome to the 21st century! This is Web 2.0

We are not saying don’t use those tools Just be informed about them and the data laws that apply!

Your @sd72.net account has some benefits: The majority of content stored in Office 365 is stored in one of the two Canadian Microsoft servers back east. The apps that do store information on US servers is protected by COIPPA laws There are plans of eventually moving the information stored on US servers onto the Canadian servers

We (the school) have to protect your privacy, therefore: Users must: Only use your @sd72.net for educational, school related activities. Abide by the School District #72 Technology and Acceptable Use Guideline Act in accordance with the Timberline Code of Conduct, and follow all school and district rules. Report any inappropriate behaviour immediately to a teacher, counsellor, or administrator. Surrender account details to an administrator upon request. THE RULES

We (the school) have to protect your privacy, therefore: Users must NOT: Post or volunteer any private or personal information online, including the Office 365 account (such as: DOB, home address, passwords, social insurance numbers, driver's licenses, passports, health care number/card, etc.) Engage in any illegal or inappropriate activity online. Bully or pressure others to engage or do something they do not feel comfortable Give their account information to any other person, including your close friends. THE RULES

In order to set you up with a @sd72 In order to set you up with a @sd72.net account, we need your informed consent.

To summarize, by giving consent you: Acknowledge that any information, including your first and last name, that is placed on the SD72 Office 365 for Education (@sd72.net) is stored on servers located in the United States of America and is therefore subject to the data laws of that country such as the Patriot Act and other Laws Agree to abide by the School District #72 Technology and Acceptable Use Guideline (OP 140), the Timberline Code of Conduct, and that you will not engage in cyberbullying, or any inappropriate/illegal activity online.
