Shania Mastan 7th Period How to Survive 8th Grade Shania Mastan 7th Period

Welcome! __ __ __ __ __ __ Hey, so whoever is reading this is probably wondering about eighth grade - it’s ups, downs, the whole thing. Well, I’m going to be completely honest with you - it’s definitely not easy but with enough hard work, time, and the right attitude you can definitely get through the year. Now I’m not going to give you the basic teacher’s response which is to study and you will be fine but I will try my best to answer any questions/provide you with tips. Because if you are anything like I was at the beginning of eighth grade, you are probably on the verge of a panic attack and I’m here to tell you that there’s no reason to be!

ELA ELA is a little bit different from your previous classes. The thing about 8th grade is that these classes become more advanced meaning you tend to focus a lot more on writing, poetry, and real world projects than the basic comprehension you are used to. I would also get used to public speaking because while it can be scary, I personally did a lot of projects involving presenting. The EOG’s are pretty much made of reading comprehension passages even though that’s probably not what you focus on in class. So to study for those - I would just do practice tests and you should be fine.

Math We do a lot with graphing this year so I would definitely recommend buying the graphing calculator because it’s very beneficial for homework and you can use it for high school. Take good notes and keep your binder organized (I know it’s very overused but it’s true) because at the end of the year you can look through them to study for EOG’s. You don’t really need to know area/volume formulas (it’s still good to study them), but you do need to know about slope, functions, and tables.

Science Do as much extra credit as you can, especially if you have Earth and Environmental Science because the opportunities are easy even though they require a little bit of work. When studying for tests - even though this sounds like too much of work, make sure you don’t procrastinate. By spreading out the topics - you are less overwhelmed and can actually understand things instead of cramming last minute. Ask questions on ANYTHING you need help with, because you will regret not asking them in the future. ANYTIME you are confused, ask right away to clear up your confusion.

Social Studies Keep track of all your notes because when you have to answer study guides they come in handy. Your study guide is usually the only thing you need to study for a test and if you can answer those questions, you can answer the ones on the test. The great thing about this class is that anytime you are struggling with something you can always get extra credit by doing the political cartoons and it’s a VERY easy way to raise your grade. Kahoots are always super handy when reviewing for tests, so make sure you pay attention. Also at the end of the year I would recommend studying by taking practice tests because they are the closest thing you have to the actual one.

Spanish Practice conjugations of verbs - regular and irregular Use quizlet to help you study because the different activities really help in learning new vocabulary. Work on grammar and knowing response to basic questions and answers for the test at the end of the year.

Health You will watch a lot of movies that apply to your lessons to show how it would be in the real world. You also have a lot of worksheets so I would recommend paying attention to your lessons. You learn how to perform CPR and have to take a test but I would just review the steps so you can do well.

Chorus Only join chorus if you really love music and like to sing because while the field trips are fun - you need to be passionate about singing or you won’t be interested in the class. You don’t just learn to sing choral music but also learn how to read different pieces of music. If you like music then you will definitely enjoy chorus because I can honestly say it was one of the best classes I had and made so many memories in that class.

Clubs Join as many clubs as you can but only if they interest you. They take time and effort so do the ones that you really like but don’t be afraid to join them at the same time. You need to maintain good grades and behavior to be a part of many of these clubs, so make sure they don’t affect your school work because if you get overwhelmed then it starts to go downhill. If you are musically talented than I would definitely join other music clubs at Harris Road like show choir, all state chorus, all county chorus or band, or jazz band.
