Principle of Design Balance

What do you think of when you hear the word “balance”?

Balance Beam Roller- Blading Bike Riding

Balance within art…. Visual Balance- art that can be seen rather than weighed. Balance plays a part of helping art work to look aesthetically pleasing. Aesthetic- Eye pleasing or beautiful to the viewer.

Dividing artwork to create balance All artworks have….. Central dividing axis - splits the artwork in half. Horizontal Axis- cuts the artwork in half horizontally so that both top and bottom sides match up. Vertical Axis- cuts the artwork in half vertically so that the left and right sides match up.

Two categories of balance: FORMAL INFORMAL Formal Balance- occurs when equal or very similar elements are placed on the opposite sides of a central axis Informal Balance- occurs when objects and images are asymmetrical within the artwork.

Formal Balance Symmetrical Balance- occurs when two images are the same or identical on both sides of the central axis. PHOTOGRAPHY

Symmetry within Buildings/Architecture Taj Mahal Whitehouse

Symmetry within artwork

Radial BAlance Radial Balance- occurs when elements go out from a center point and radiate out in a circular pattern always leading your eye towards the center.

Radial Patterns

Informal Balance: Asymmetrical Asymmetrical Balance- occurs when there are slight changes on either side of the images, and the sides are similar but not necessarily equal.

Jan Van Eyck Frida Kahlo Winslow Homer Mark Rothko

Other factors with informal Balance in artwork….. Color Value- light and dark Shape- 2D Texture- feeling or look of how it might feel Size- how big or small Contour-outline/outer edges Composition-placement

Degas’ uses the contour of the ballerina in the foreground to balance out the picture with smaller dancers and different shaped objects in the background. This abstract painting uses low intensity colors like blue with a touch of bright high intensity color of red and orange to add balance.

This abstract painting uses multiple layers of paint to create a textured look and provides balance by using little texture at the bottom than at the top. Thomas Eakins uses the position of the landscape to even the picture out by using trees and land on either side.

Quality and Expression with Balance Formal balance -is often used by the artist wants to express calmness, stability, and peace within heir artwork. Informal balance- is often used when artist create landscapes and abstract paintings because it is very asymmetric in design. Both are used to provide unity and harmony among works of art, depending upon the artist and the message they would like to convey would be the type of balance they would use.

Radial Balance Project Create y0ur own Paper plate Mandala Create TWO Radial designs on a template paper that I give to you. Both must be turned in for a grade. Each design must Radiate from the CENTER From the two design you must CHOOSE ONE for the final MANDALA design. Sketch your FINAL design on a paper plate Then add color with construction paper
