USDA -Natural Resources Conservation Service Michael Cox, P.E. Agricultural Engineer BSAgE 1993

Just What Do We Do? Help conserve our natural resources -- Soil, Water, Air, Plant, Animals, & Human Assist Private Landowners & Producers Assist Local, State and Federal Agencies Assist other local groups of people

NRCS Engineering State Engineering Staff - Indianapolis State Conservation Engineer (requires a PE) Agricultural Engineer Civil Engineer Engineering Liaison with Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) on Confined Feeding

NRCS Engineering 4 Area Engineers 8 Technical Team Engineers Located at Vincennes, North Vernon, Lafayette, and Fort Wayne 8 Technical Team Engineers Various locations throughout the state Mainly Ag & Civil Engineers

NRCS Engineering Agricultural Engineers Civil Engineers Hydraulic Engineers Planning Engineers Design Engineers Environmental Engineers Irrigation & Water Management Engineers

NRCS Engineering Agricultural Engineers work with individual landowners with conservation practices design waterways, erosion control structures, pipe structures, terraces, ponds, irrigation animal waste systems, lagoons, concrete & earthen pits stream bank erosion control measures

NRCS Engineering Civil Engineers work on larger watershed size projects involving many landowners do field surveys work directly with design engineers construction inspection of these projects integral part of contract administration

NRCS Engineering Hydraulic Engineers are the hydrology experts in determining runoff develop hydrology models for large watersheds do flood routing analysis for both dams and channels simulate floods flows using computer models

NRCS Engineering Planning Engineers develop conservation measures for large watersheds - dams, channels, irrigation, land treatment measures make assessments of the costs, benefits, environmental impacts, economics puts all the different projects together into a watershed plan

NRCS Engineering Design Engineers designs watershed projects and individual on- farm practices develops construction drawings, specifications, cost estimates develops standard drawings and criteria for others to use

NRCS Engineering Environmental Engineers Involved with wetland determinations and restorations and mitigation Ag waste systems Ag waste disposal issues and nutrient management plans

NRCS Engineering Irrigation Engineers work directly with landowners in designing irrigation systems and schedules they are mainly in the more arid states west of here

NRCS Engineering Opportunities Much of our work is outside Work directly with landowners and operators Design large and small projects Work directly with contractors on construction Develop standards and standard drawings Engineers in every state and Washington D. C.

NRCS Engineering Design Hydrology Hydraulics Soils Structural

Typical Projects-Indiana Animal Waste Storage (Concrete & Earthen) Water & Sediment Control Basins Grassed Waterways Grade Stabilization Structures Wetland Restoration/Ponds Stream bank erosion protection

My Experiences at IDEM Review designs for all types of Animal Waste Storage Learn about IN Confined Feeding Rule Learn more about the interaction between Federal,State, and Local Agencies See the latest technology and advances in Waste Storage and Treatment Travel to all parts of Indiana
