Scientific Method

What characteristics can we measure and how can we measure them? Measurement What characteristics can we measure and how can we measure them?

measure unit symbol tool

Length The Standard International unit for measuring length is the meter. Abbreviated m. The tool used to measure length is the meter stick.

Mass The Standard International unit used to measure mass is the kilogram. Abbreviated kg. Mass is measured using a balance. Mass is the amount of matter in an object. Mass is not the same thing as weight; weight is based on gravity and mass is not.

Temperature The Standard International unit for measuring temperature is Kelvin. Abbreviated K. Temperature is measured using a thermometer. For the purposes of this class we will use Celsius when taking temperature.

Time The SI unit for time is the second The abbreviation is s. A stopwatch is the tool used for measuring time.

Volume Volume is a derived unit measured in liters or cubic centimeters. Abbreviated L or cc or cm3. The volume of objects that are fluids or irregularly shaped are measured using liters; a graduated cylinder is the measuring tool. Volume of easily measured objects is measured using cubic centimeters; length x width x height for rectangular solids. 1 cubic centimeter = 1 milliliter

Density Density is a measurement found by dividing the mass of an object by its volume. If you are asked for the density of an object you must first know its mass and volume.

The following prefixes are used to indicate when the base unit is multiplied or divided by units of tens: Name Unit Example kilo (k) x1,000 1 kg = 1000g deca (da) x10 1 dag = 10g Base unit deci (d) ÷10 1 dg = 0.1g centi (c) ÷100 1 cm = 0.01m or 100cm = 1m milli (m) ÷1,000 1 mm = 0.001m or 1000mm = 1m micro (μ) ÷1,000,000 1 μm = 0.000001m or 1000μm = 1mm nano (n) ÷1,000,000,000 1nm = 0.000000001m or 1000nm = 1μm
