Pride Vanity Conceit Pompous Egotistical Big Headed Pretentious Arrogant

Polar opposite of pride is humility. Diametrically opposed. “the character of one who, with a swollen estimate of his own powers or merits, looks down on others and even treats them with insolence and contempt” (Thayer) Proverbs 28:25 He who is of a proud heart stirs up strife. Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall. Psalms 10:4 The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts. 1 Timothy 6:3-5 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with godliness, (4) he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, (5) useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself. Polar opposite of pride is humility. Diametrically opposed.

Humility “1) the having a humble opinion of one’s self 2) a deep sense of one’s (moral) littleness 3) modesty, humility, lowliness of mind” (Thayer) The greatest person to ever live was also the most humble. John 13:5-7 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. (6) Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, "Lord, are You washing my feet?" (7) Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.“ This was not His greatest act of humility.

Philippians 2:5-8 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Philippians 2:3-4 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Selfish ambition: “1) electioneering or intriguing for office 1a) apparently, in the NT a courting distinction, a desire to put one’s self forward, a partisan and fractious spirit which does not disdain low arts” (Thayer) Conceit: “1) vain glory, groundless, self esteem, empty pride 2) a vain opinion, error” (Thayer) “The idea seems to be that of mere self-esteem; a mere desire to honor ourselves, to attract attention, to win praise, to make ourselves uppermost, or foremost, or the main object.” (Barns)

False Humility Colossians 2:18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, Colossians 2:23 These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh. Humility does not draw attention to itself. Don’t tell people how good you are, let them figure it out. Don’t use humility to garner praise.

False Humility Matthew 23:5-7 But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments. They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, 'Rabbi, Rabbi.' Humility does not draw attention to itself. Don’t tell people how good you are, let them figure it out. Don’t use humility to garner praise.

What some call false humility Paul did not seek out glory – 1 Thess. 2:6 His boasting was in the cross – Gal. 6:14 Self deprecation Least of the apostles – 1 Cor. 15:9-10 Less than the least of all the saints – Eph. 3:8 Chief of sinners – 1 Tim. 1:15 1 Thessalonians 2:6 Nor did we seek glory from men, either from you or from others, when we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. Galatians 6:14 But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. 1 Corinthians 15:9-10 For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. (10) But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. Ephesians 3:8 To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 1 Timothy 1:15 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.

Humble because our talents come from God Romans 12:3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.

We have no right to self-glory for serving God Luke 17:10 So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, 'We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do.' "

God blesses the humble James 4:6 Therefore He says: "GOD RESISTS THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.“ James 4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. 1 Peter 5:6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time,
