Plagiarism in Venezuela: “Plagio” in Spanish: The word itself comes from the greek word: “Plagio”, which means “dolo o fraude”.The word later past from greek to latin as “plagiarus” which means “kidnapper” in english.

Plagiarism in Venezuela: The myth of Plagiarism: In Venezuela, plagiarism is not considered a crime. It has its repercussions in certain fields such as the academia field, but it is not taken "seriously" according to university professors.

Plagiarism in Venezuela: The myth of Plagiarism: The Law of Rights to the Author, Article 18, states that it corresponds to the author the right of total or partial publishing of the work. The author has to give permission in order for the work to be used without consent. Work has to be cited/credited if used.

Plagiarism in Venezuela: The myth of Plagiarism: Venezuela is “black listed” for piracy of movies and other creative content. Piracy is completely legal.

Plagiarism in Venezuela: The myth of Plagiarism: However, Venezuela has very strict regulations for the use of other brands logo or products for “Comparative Advertising”. Differently from the U.S, It is highly punished to compare brands in advertisements. Venezuela (Teragrip ad) U.S (Claritin ad)

Plagiarism in China: What is Plagiarism: Academic standards Definition: Completely or partially copied the works (settings, concepts, lines, scenes, pictures…) of others for their own purposes In China plagiarism is considered a crime.

Plagiarism in China: What is Plagiarism: Use and modify the ideas of others' works Same scenario in a commercial ad

Plagiarism in China: What is Plagiarism: Copy other’s original sentences, no quotation marks Same copy from a previous advertisement

Plagiarism in China: What is Plagiarism: Take other’s pictures directly. Poster included other designer’s illustration

Plagiarism in China: What is Plagiarism: More than three cited sentences (even have the quotation marks) Reorganize the sentences, but the whole paragraph is similar to the others Eg. Copy lines in another thesis paper Eg. Only change the sentences order in one paragraph

Plagiarism in China: What is not Plagiarism: Actually, it’s really difficult to judge the standard of plagiarism in China, unless you totally copy others’ works as your own. Believe it or not, it has a nice name in China, called “reference”, and most Chinese people even have no idea about plagiarism because they may started to do like that when they was little.

Plagiarism in China: What is not Plagiarism: It’s easy to find that the pattern in the right picture is very similar to the left one’s. However, in this artist’s opinion, that can just be judged as “exceeding reference” rather than plagiarism.

Plagiarism in China: What is not Plagiarism: The left image is a film’s propaganda poster from China, it’s style looks like similar with the cartoon on the right side right? But it can be explained as learning the form from the cartoon, that can even be regarded as a good idea in design.

Plagiarism in China: What is not “Plagiarism”: “”” Although these two paintings have the same style and composition, but the artist thinks that as long as the painting owns his own style, that can’t be thought as plagiarism. In addition, many Chinese artists think that if your artwork can be better than the original one, although there are many similar aspects between them, it can’t be regarded as plagiarism, that’s your successful!

Plagiarism in China: What is not Plagiarism: There is an old Chinese saying “All articles are created by copying”. That’s just a joke, but that’s true for some people think like that. They don’t think that using others ideas, pictures or a part of content from others articles is plagiarism, although they know that’s incorrect, they still take the risk to to it.
