The Skeletal System

What are the functions of the Skeletal System? Gives body shape Provides support Allows movement Provides protection Produces blood

What are Bones made of? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kd2ctxZwlc

What are bones made of continued… Collagen: Protein that provides soft framework inside bone. (spongy bone) Calcium Phosphate: 2 different minerals coming together to make compact bone. Bone Marrow: Soft, fatty substance in the cavities of bones that produce blood.

Protection What organs or protected by bones? Brain Heart Lungs Intestines Liver

Broken Bones Complete Fracture: When the bone is broken in two places Greenstick Fracture: When the bone cracks on one side only Single Fracture: When the bone is broken in one place Comminuted Fracture: Crushed, bone is splintered Bowing Fracture: ONLY HAPPENS IN KIDS! When the bone bends but does not break

How do bones heal? Your bones are natural healers. At the location of the fracture, your bones will produce many new cells and tiny blood vessels that rebuild the bone. These cells cover both ends of the broken bone and close up the break until it is good as new.
