Overview of Faculty Burdens Education is challenged to change as innovations change the way we think about interactions with information and knowledge. New generations of Students pass through with new expectations and new needs. Levels of readiness and expertise for Faculty become increasingly important. Professors are over extended, trying to find the balance between teaching, service, and scholarship. I want to understand these 4 areas and build on exiting knowledge and add to the field, inform and develop new knowledge
Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge Integration and intersection of three key knowledge areas where teachers need to be effective: a) Technology Knowledge - knowledge of technology as a resource and tool for teaching, b) Pedagogical Knowledge - knowledge of teaching theory and practice as it relates to learning, and c) Content Knowledge - knowledge of a specialized topic area. Lifelong learning of pedagogical and technological knowledge is accepted as necessary for the preparation of pre-service teachers in K-12 education, but not in higher education. While content knowledge (i.e. chemistry, law, pharmacy, humanities, etc.) is typically emphasized as a critical component for professors, the other two areas are not as well recognized. Mishra, P & Koehler, M. (2006). Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge: A Framework for Teacher Knowledge. Practically I’m thinking about… Teaching Practice Research Students Faculty Professional Development Active Learning Problem Solving Learning Lecture Online Learning Course Design Assessment Instructional Technology Teaching Strategies Groups Exams Application/Lab Learning Outcomes Hybrid Pedagogy Content Theory Motivation Grading Lifelong Learning Course Evaluations Engagement
Theoretically I think about… The unity needed between content, pedagogy, and technology. Challenges Faculty have as they continue to teach and as innovations surface. What Faculty and the Institution value. Motivations, human characteristics, and change: psychological dimensions
