Title: Adoration and Thanksgiving in the Lord’s Prayer Text: Matthew 6:9-113, Luke 11:2-4 9 This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. By Pastor Micah Adamson May 29, 2016 Matthew 6:9-10 (NIV84) Title

The context of the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6 Don’t show off for people (like a hypocrite/actor) instead pray with sincerity. Don’t show off for God (like a pagan/gentile) instead pray short and simple. Don’t show off for yourself (as an unforgiven/ing person) instead pray with sorrow for sin. Genesis 1:26-28

The context of the Lord’s Prayer in Luke 2 The disciples asked Jesus how to pray: since other disciples asked their teachers how to pray. since they wanted to pray like Jesus prayed. You can even get food from: a cranky neighbor in the middle of the night by asking. a sinful earthly father by asking. How much more can you: get food from your holy, loving, heavenly Father by asking. get spiritually good things from God too. Confidently ask God confidently for things (even if it seems improper). Genesis 1:26-28

The context of the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6 and Luke 2 The fact that God is OUR heavenly Father (in Jesus) is what makes the difference. Jesus taught on prayer more than once, the exact wording wasn’t the main point. The Lord’s Prayer is God’s list of prayer requests that He wants us to pray for. Genesis 1:26-28

Matthew 6:9-13 (NIV84) Luke 11:2-4 (NIV84) 9 “This, then, is how you should pray: “ ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ [For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.](KJV, NKJV) 2 He said to them, “When you pray, say: “ ‘… Father …, your kingdom come. … 3 Give us each day our daily bread. 4 Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.’ ” Genesis 1:26-28
