Who was Pablo Picasso Picasso is one of the best known artists throughout history. Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, stage designer, poet, and collage artist. He is best known for his style of artwork called “cubism” and for his cubist portraits. His artwork often expresses emotion through color use and use of lines. His paintings are divided into different periods, this means that he painted in certain styles for long amounts of time.

The Blue Period This is one of Picasso’s many styles of artworks. This is from his Blue Period named for the color he used. What emotion does the color blue seem to communicate in this artwork? What else seems to contribute to this emotion? Does this painting look realistic aside from the color? Why or why not? How did Picasso create lighter shades of blue? And the darker shades of blue?

The Rose Period After his Blue Period, Picasso moved on to his Rose Period. Compare and contrast the Blue Period and the Rose Period. What is a monochromatic color scheme? Is there an example of a monochromatic color scheme found in this painting and if so, where? Which painting do you prefer this one, or the one from the Blue Period? Why?

Cubist Musical Instruments Here is an example of a style that Picasso and another artist are famous for creating- Cubism. Picasso would take an object and draw it using basic shapes (circles, squares, triangles, etc.). Once drawn, he would kind of break that drawing apart and put it back together in crazy ways, creating a whole new picture. The title of this work is Musical Instruments and Fruit Bowl on a Pedestal, can you see pieces of musical instruments or the fruit bowl?

Can you find piece of musical instruments in this artwork? Do you think that making subjects like musical instruments into cubist works makes them more or less interesting? Why? What types of shapes do you see in this painting? Does Picasso use more Primary colors or neutral colors in this artwork?

Collaged Musical Instruments In a collage, you are usually going to find less details than a drawing, why do you think this is? Can you identify tints used in this collage? Can you identify shades in this collage?

Are there more organic shapes used in this collage or geometric shapes Are there more organic shapes used in this collage or geometric shapes? How do you know? What color scheme is used in this artwork? What do you think inspires Picasso to do so many artworks about musical instruments?

How is this last collage different from the other two you have seen? How has Picasso used line in all three of the collages? Why would good craftsmanship be really important when creating a collage?
