Total Column can’t uploaded… Grades in the total column (far right end of gradebook) are determined by COURSE scheme (Edit course settings.) Total column is NOT available in Coursetools, so we need to move grades to “final”. Small class: manually type grades into final column. This also allows the “tweaking” many instructors do.

What about a big class? First: Download grades to a spreadsheet. Click the gear to reveal a menu. Click “Download Scores (.csv)” Open the downloaded file in Excel or another spreadsheet program. (How to do this depends on your Browser. Google Chrome puts an icon in the lower left corner.)

What about a big class? In your spreadsheet, the far right columns in the spreadsheet show TWO totals. IMPORTANT NOTE: Before posting grades, the FINAL SCORE column should match the CURRENT SCORE column for every student! “FINAL score” assumes all ungraded assignments are zeros. “CURRENT score” column drops all ungraded assignments from the total. Students see totals and grades associated with “CURRENT Score” by default in their grade view in Canvas. If unsubmitted assignments should count as zeros, zeros need to be entered in the gradebook!

Copy and Paste Use the following steps to copy your GRADES into the final column. Highlight the GRADES ONLY (no headings) for all students in your spreadsheet. Press ctrl+C to copy (or right click and choose copy) to put the grades on the clipboard. Highlight the first student’s cell in the “Final” column. Press ctrl+V to paste (or right click and paste) to paste the grades into the final column.

Save the spreadsheet Save your spreadsheet somewhere secure, and close it. Remember where it is! (Your H: drive is FERPA compliant. Your C: drive is not!) Excel may warn you that the file is a CSV file – but that’s what Canvas needs, so click “YES” to keep the CSV format.

Uploading grades Then: Go back to your Canvas gradebook. Click the gear again to reveal the menu. Click Upload Scores (from .csv) Choose the spreadsheet file you saved.

Confirm the changes Canvas should show you the grades it’s about to upload. Confirm that they’re correct, then “Save Changes” You can return to the grade book to make individual changes after the upload as well.
