Somalian Refugee Homework Help By: John Robbins Honors & Scholars at The Ohio State University Impacting the Future Service Opportunity Why Serve? A life of service is a life well lived. As I grow as a person, I want to say that I have made the world a better place. I will be an advocate for employers to have more days of service to benefit the communities around them. I will take my own personal free time and use it to serve. Also I will donate to charities of importance to me. Service is a big part of my life. This semester alone I have put in over 25 hours of service giving back to the community. This is why I thought service would be fitting for my 2nd year project. Right now I continue to serve within International Affairs Scholars, APO service fraternity and the Club Baseball team. Somalian Refugee Homework Help -- Description Throughout the past 2 semesters I have been going to help kids with their after school homework. The kids I have been helping are Somalian refugees. They have came here with their parents and have had to start a new life. The Transition to living in a new country is not easy. Many of the kids and parents have been here for a couple year now. As they are forced into a new culture and to the English language it is good to let them know that there are people in the Columbus community on there side. This is one of the main reasons why this program is so important. I feel as if it has impacted the families in this community and myself in a big way. -- Location: Capital Park is a subsidized apartment community in Northeast Columbus and home to over 300 Somali refugee families. Linden is the city and the public schools thee students attend. -- Complex Offerings Classes like English, Citizenship testing, Computer learning, Sewing, Community Gardening and Homework Help for the children. IA within this Project International Affairs has taught me a lot and has given me the opportunity to explore things that I wouldn’t have been able to without them. IA has taught me that in a world of unfair actions, you can stand against it and make the area you live in a better place for everyone. My favorite experience that I have had in IA is our educational trip to Toronto Canada. Seeing and being able to explore a foreign city for multiple days was an adventure of a life time. I learned a lot about the culture and the government policies toward refugees in Canada. Throughout my whole IA experience I have been exposed to the hardships many people face. This is what led me to my project to serve the campus, the community and the world. IA impact on my Service Being in the International Affairs scholars, I have been immersed in a world focused on culture of acceptance and tolerance. I was also exposed to the unjust practices within the world and our community. For this project I thought I would attempt to make a small difference and serve the international community as well as the Campus and Columbus communities. A piece of my service this year has been focused on helping Somalian refugee students with their after school homework, a connection I would not have made without International Affairs Scholars program Other Service Projects Heart to Heart Food Pantry CHA Animal Shelter MLK Jr. Pay It Forward Day Wexner Medical Center Blood Drive Future service opportunities For more information about service opportunities here in Columbus I recommend researching Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity.
